Can Galway win Liam McCarthy?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was very impressed with Galway yesterday and have been from a long way back. Was this performance a flash in the pan or are we about to see a Galway team who can finally win an All-Ireland.
As a Tipp man I think they will pose us massive problems. However one thing I have noticed recently about Galway is that they don't seem to turn up in Croke Park as of late and do the biz.
They have lethal forwards now willing to fight for every ball and 2 midfielders who will run all day. The defense maybe a problem but can hold their own.
After the Leinster final when Cunningham stated he said to Cody we'll see you in the All Ireland final in September I kind of laughed but now that is a distinct possibility.
I am not writing up Galway in any way but based on yesterday's performance can they put two more of them together. And it would be no mean feat if they were to beat Cork , Tipp & Kilkenny to win it.

I'm not a hurling man, but surely the amount of wides that Galway hit yesterday would be a concern? Especially given that you'd expect Tipp to give a lot less time on the sliotar than Cork did yesterday.

Do you mean they don't, or now use not, turn up in Thurles?

I think they will beat Tipp and Kilkenny will beat Waterford.

But do they have 2 big days in them? That's the question.

Would love to see them win it. A Galway v Waterford final would be noval and great for the game. Sadly can't see Waterford beating Kilkenny but Galway can beat Tipp.

A win for either Galway or Waterford or better both would be just brilliant for hurling. If they beat tipP then they have every chance of beating KK. The one thing I would be still worried about for Galway is the speed of their hurling. The speed and intensity of KK and Tipp stickwork is what seperates them from the rest IMO

Given that your record in Thurles is fairly abysmal I was surprised with how well you played.

You know what I mean Galway recently on the big days in Croker have just not performed.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Of course they can win it .
However Kilkenny and Tipp remain the favourites with Galway and Waterford still a bit behind them.

They certainly can (and probably will) beat Tipp. I'd love to see them in a final as you would have to believe all that promise and all that potential would be finally realised.

We definitely CAN win it, but its a tall order really. Even if we beat Tipp well have to beat the cats then.
Itll be some all ireland if we do.
Has anyone ever won an all ireland having beaten each of the big three along the way?

Ha wildpundit,im fully awake now.My answer is yes.Absolutely.Yesterdays performance, added to the destruction of Dublin makes the Galway v Tipp semi final a 50/50 for me.I wudnt be too sure Kilkenny will beat Waterford either.I see J Tyrell is out.Would be a big loss.Ill be at both semi finals and final,so three great games to look forward to and discuss.Final answer - YES.

i tipped galway at the start of the year. And the best thing yesterday was joe had an off day .. That wont happen again and now he has the support.
6 forward
2 midfielders
1 wing back all scoring from play

If they show and play they will win, Its not the talent they lack its the consistancy they lack

Confidence is growing its getting interesting now

Yes they most certainly can, Cork were abysmal but Galway are well capable of beating Tipperary (as Tipp are capable of beating Galway). I fancy Galway to get to September.

Jon Carter. Yes. Clare in 1997
Beat cork in the Munster semi 1-19 to 0-18, beat Kilkenny in the AISF 1-17 to 1-13 and beat Tipp twice in Munster and AI Finals. This is the only one in the back door era of modern times, as the big three won every all Ireland since 1998 with the exception of Clare 2013. It may have happened if the likes of Limerick or waterford beat Tipp and cork in Munster and KK in the final, but not 100 percent sure. It would be the greatest All Ireland Galway would win and they would be the first non munster county to do it.

In response to the thread, absolutely. Galway-Tipp in my eyes is a 50-50 game. Tiredness of playing 3 games in 13 days against both last years all Ireland finalists may have caught Galway last year, but the schedule for Galway this year is much kinder. I think if Galway get over tipp, the will have the momentum of a freight train, as well as a revenge mission against Kilkenny. They'll never get a better chance.

For the talk about Galway's lack of consistency, they had two average and three dominant performances in this years championship. They have never played more games, and they'll have an advantage over Tipp on that score. Everything is set up for Galway and the only reason they wont be champions this year will be if they are not good enough.

Galway served due notice yesterday that they have the team to beat Tipp and get to the All Ireland where it's likely that will face Kilkenny in my opinion.

Having the same manager in Galway for more than the customary 2 years has helped Galway and their physical presence yesterday with a lot of scorers will do their confidence a lot of good.

They were superb in all aspects yesterday and the fact they had so many wides and still won in a canter shows their firepower and their confidence to shoot. They have some things to work on, but Joe is now not on his own and this will give Joe more room against Tipp. They are cute on the sideline and they have leaders and raw talent all over the field.

Tipp will be formidable but Galway are a match for them. It will be a great match up.

Kilkenny have a little more time to be ready for a waterford without Jackie Tyrell and they know how Waterford are set so the game will be really interesting. Waterford showed lots of class and fight and their shooting was much better yesterday. They are a formidable outfit and MCGrath now has the Croke Park factor to contend with. So far he has done a. Superb job and he is by far the most articulate manager when interviewed so how he prepares his team to face Kilkenny will be key to success. We know that Kilkenny. Will be prepared so this again should be a super game.
