U21 Football Championship played too early?

(Oldest Posts First)

Should the U21 Football Championship be restored to summer months?

Currently the final is played on the May Bank Holiday weekend. It should even be starting at that stage. I've been to a number of U21 hurling matches down through the year. A decent crowd of 7000 were in Cusack Park in Ennis last Wednesday evening for the Clare v Waterford Munster U21 hurling final.

I know there is talk of burnout etc. but the championships are for summer months. In my own humble opinion, the U21 championship should be held over the summer months.

No it shouldn't. Championships shouldn't automatically have to be played over summer months. playing it earlier means counties have less reasons to hold up club games involving u21 county players

No, under 21s shouldn't have to be committed to another county team during the summer, should use these years to enjoy their summer as when your playing minor and senior your going through the entire summer if your successful, young lads can't go on LC holidays etc.

I agree it should be, and in relation to the burnout it would say it would be easier for the players to play during the summer as they would have less on, I no in Roscommon the lads that were on the senior team Harney,Smith and Murtagh were in January, Feb and March this year playing Hastings cup,Fbd league , Colleges football, Club, and NFL as well as early rounds of u21 championship that's too much championship should be played at same time hurling one is played

I think it should be held over the summer months,BUT any U21s on senior panels should not be allowed to play.

Imo you should have to name your 30 man senior squad and any U21s named would not be allowed on the U21 squad.Regardless of playing them in the summer or not this should be the case,as you often have U21 games in between important league matches.

Looking at the football point of view, with the top Under 21 players being brought into the Senior teams then there is no chance that you can play Club, U21 Club, U21 County, County Football/Hurling with whatever else is going on if they are studying and so on...

Play the U21 in the summer but counties should not be allowed select players to play for more than one county panel. No seniors playing U21 and no U21's playing minor.

I don't think it should be played during the summer because it would lead to the first line above.
That therefore weakens either the U21 side or the senior side, which everybody know will lead to the U21 competition being weaker. The U21 championship is keenly contested now and a change to a summer tournament would hamper its development.
As for U21 lads not being involved in the league I would completely agree with that one. Or at least till the U21 side were KOd

would be very hard to schedule over the summer months with 21 hurling on too. Then again Kerry are the only non dual county in Munster so they wouldn't have them worries.Ideally need to move Sigerson/Fitzgibbon Cups to November

Think they are played at the right time at the moment. Maybe even bring it forward by another month. The championship is condensed and is over leaving players to play for the seniors. It's a good way to see what players is standing out at their own age grade which could become useful for the senior set up.

playing it in the summer would just lead to even more fixture chaos

I think you are as well to scrap the U-21 championship if it is to become diluted (without its best players).

The number of U21s among the top tier GAA teams is very small. (if you've any doubts simple look at the odds for the Young Player of the Year)

What's very strange is the fact that the U21 hurling gets far more television coverage than the U21 hurling.

I was at the Munster U21 hurling final last evening. It was a good evening's entertainment midweek during the summer. In my own humble opinion it is a shame that football supporters cannot enjoy s similar evening of entertainment at U21 level during the summer.

Yes it's played too early, it's the same with the hurling Christy Ring, Nicky Rachard, Lory Meagher cups, with the u21 football aren't majority of players doing exams at colleges and universities when the champ is on, how can they concentrate on exams with football also taking place and imagine what would happen if they broke their hand or worse still end up in hospital for a week or 2 when exams are on, bring the champs back to summer

People here saying its shouldn't be in summer so lads dont have to commit to 2 county teams but this is already the case in hurling.
Anyway I agree with those who say you should either be on U21 or senior panel. Play it in summer on same weekends as senior championship matches, double headers where possible.
Simultaneously promote the competition and deal with some of the burnout issues.
