Umpires/ Video Technology

(Oldest Posts First)

Just watching the Sunday game and the highlights of the Westmeath Limerick Hurling qualifier was on. Limerick were awarded a goal which was shown to be wide and the umpire on that side hadn't got the slightest clue that it was wide. It was halfway througnh the second half and Westmeath were well in the game but that goal changed things quite a bit. Now, whether or not Westmeath would have pushed on and won is another thing (but bare in mind, Westmeath trailed by four with 10 left and without that goal it would have been a 1 point game).

My question is are umpires redundant at this stage? Should video technology be introduced? It would give clear decision on square balls etc. and with Tv cameras at almost every game it certainly would be feasible.

it was incredible really..as you say a one point game with 10 min left? any thing might have happened..how he missed it is unbelievable.it wasnt even a hard shot and it never touched the net or anything to confuse him..

good idea but the gaa are so backward and afraid of change that there is about as much hope of that happening as there is of a much needed league championship being introduced.

I remember Kerry been awarded a goal v Tipp one year when the ball hit the back stanchion behind the goal. Tipp were well in the game too at that point.

Something needs to be done umpires and ref's are getting some calls wrong and with all the technology available pity its not used.

Look at rugby for example the Video ref is used to make calls on penalties , foul play & scoring.

In this day and age to me the GAA just don't want to invest the money & time into that technology.

So in the end the video evidence proved the umpire and referee got it spot on.

I await Donal Og's apology Sunday night.

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need technology

Yes , they should Definatly use video technology
Think of Louth and loosing the Leinster final
Think of all the other errors ( penalty for Kerry, gaol for Limerick that was not ) it's happening all the time
Pressure has to be put on the people who run the Association to clean up their act and move with the time as regards technology
Even players getting away with fouling that was undetected could receive a suspension if it so merited

Interesting question is why don't umpires switch sides at half time. It would help if an umpire was biased toward a certain team and makes sense to even things up anyway.
