Red card after half time?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

On the red card - what's the rule there on retrospective action having let the first half finish without taking action. Who can advise at half time to hand out a red card?

Thought it was a strange one myself. Surely the change had already taken place. I wasnt really paying attention but it looked to be a harsh red. Roscommon player was winding him up and he didnt even look to be looking at him.

I cant't say I have ever seen it happen before but I would have thought that retrospective action could only be taken after the game is over.....although I could be totally wrong

I am completely baffled by that decision though I must admit I do not know every rule but it has to have been on the basis of tv evidence as there was enough of a stoppage at the time to consult other officials. Also the ref gave a free to Cavan in 1st half for an off the ball way down the other end of the field and when the Roscommon players were questioning why it was given he could clearly be seen pointing to his earpiece so if officials can advise easily during play I would assume it was not a case of message not getting through. Puzzling.

A simple disregard for the rules of the game by the referee!

Yes, the striking offence itself probably deserved red, but to allow 2 passages of play to take place, blow for half time, bring the teams back on, and then recall an injured player who has been replaced onto the field and red card him????

Harsh red?? More like a stupid red! He smacked him across the back of the head and cost Cavan any chance of winning the game..

The linesman saw the incident and brought it to the attention of the ref at the end of the half.

Just watched it there again and have to say it was a red. But im not sure he should have been sent off after the incident had taken place. How long can something go before the ref goes back to an incident?

ziggy - why didnt the linesman bring it to his attention at the next 2 stoppages in play? how long is allowed pass before it's too late to go back to an incident?

Lads, the question isn't was it a red card or not - that was quite conclusive. The ref is wired up yet no action was taken and play restarted with a free followed by another passage of play before half time. Why then did he decide to take action at the start of the second - were they watching the half time analysis on telly?

No doubt it was a red card offense but are we now using tv to make decisions?

I remember something similar in a Tyrone v Monaghan match (I think it was a 1/4final in 2013) when there was a bit of nonsense after the ht whistle and the ref started the 2nd half by sending Martin Penrose off. I think tonight's was a red but it's odd to see a lad being called back onto the field just to be sent off again

Is there anything in the rue book that specifies a referee musty book/send off a player immediately after an incident occurs?

I'm sure I've seen it happen loads of times where something has happened that the referee has missed and it gets highlighted to him a couple of minutes later and he then speaks to the player and books him.

Basically the same thing happened here just half time was in between.

Cavan tried to pull a fast one. He was running perfectly fine before half time

there is no question that if something happens at half time then the ref can send the player off before half time.

but he spoke to his officials, then let play continue. then let cavan plan for the 2nd half thinking they were playing with a full compliment of 15, then threw the spanner in the works - a sending off makes a difference to any game, but with 15 minutes to put it right, the effect may have been lessened. It's a bitter pill to swallow if I'm honest and it looked like a similar incident in the 2nd half which the umpire brought to his attention saw a Roscommon player get a verbal warning only.

if he'd given it at the time, then yes, it wouldve been correct.

as for his general performance - it was poor! he didnt seem to know what the black card is. Twice he gave yellow cards instead.

Was referee simply playing advantage in first half and just didn't give the red..., was informed half time by a fellow official that he missed a red card offence so gave card upon returning to pitch to restart game for second half.. nothing wrong with that.
