Cavan are Ulster's aristocrats

There ain't a lot of things that irk me in this world. But people referring to Down as the aristocrats of Ulster football does. It is endemic on this site. Just to clarify,

Aristocrat: Anything regarded as the best of it's kind.

Cavan have won more then 3 times the amount of Ulster titles Down have.

Let's not lapse into this pitfall again.

Thank you.

Ned
I have mentioned on here before about Cavan and how they declined when other Ulster counties started winning
We will start with Down who I think reached their first Ulster final in 1958 and won the first Ulster title in 1959 ( open to correction as I'm taking this off the top of my bat )
Derry won their first Ulster title in 1958 ( again open to correction)
Tyrone won their first title in ( I think) 1956
Now Donegal reached their FIRST ULSTER FINAL in 1963 ( beaten by Down in both senior and minor finals)
There was never no word about Down Derry Tyrone or Donegal in the 1900's, 20,30,40 and indeed it was around the mid 1950's when things started to change in Ulster
Donegal won Ulster for the first time in 1972 beating Tyrone in I think an 80 minute final
When Down came good in the sixties Derry Tyrone and Donegal began to improve and backwards went Cavan Now this is no slur on Cavan, done Ulster proud when we had no team and when Down Derry or Tyrone had no team plus you made history by winning the only final played outside of Ireland with the help of a Donegal man who I think played in the polo grounds final ;;; the late Colomba mcDyre (RIP) and a proud Glenties man
First Donegal man to win a Celtic cross
Since Donegal made the breakthrough in 1972i think Cavan have won one Ulster title, now compare that to Down ,Armagh, Tyrone Donegal or Derry plus Donegal will contest the 14 final out of the last 26 I think
Down were the top Ulster team of the sixties, Ulster teams were not that strong in the 70's or80's but Monaghan were good in the mid eighties. Now Down again shaded things in the 90's with two All Ireland's Tyrone probably shaded Armagh in the 00's with 3 All Ireland's and so far Donegal for maybe the first time would be the top team in Ulster ( at least until the 19 July) So in my book it's nearly 60 years since Cavan were really dominate and I don't think you have any answer to that great team sitting next door to yourselves so leave them to us to sort them out on Sunday fortnight or if somebody don't stop them they will overrun Cavan alltogether

I would have to take issue with your definition of an aristocrat there Ned.

To be an aristocrat doesn't mean you are the best at anything as both yourselves & Down bear witness to.

To be an aristocrat all you have to do is be born into the right family. You might be completely useless, like yourselves & Down, but that won't stop you being an aristocrat.

Perhaps It's time that new modern nicknames be attached to all Counties, to best represent their place in modern day Ireland.

Example:
Cavan - The Miser's
Kerry - The Butter men
Mayo - The Nearly men
Monaghan - The Diesel Washer's
Armagh - The bandits
Offaly - The BIFFO's
Laois - The Prison Guarder's
Roscommon - The Turf smokers
Cork - The Langers

I just did this for a laugh, It would be funny to hear commentators shouting that kinda thing.

It's not me that propagates the term "aristocrat", it's others, that's the whole point of the thread. Anyway, it's a term synonymous with Down for some peculiar reason, I'm merely pointing out the obvious discrepancy in applying it to them.

But at least we have a future, not much milage left in McFadden, Toye and Gallagher I'd imagine.

Cavan won all them Ulster titles back before the ESB arrived on the scene All the rest of us were in the dark
But things changed big time in the hills when we got the light and we began to see where we were going wrong
It's never been a brighter place up here in the Bluestacks than at present

Your right, Sort of. Aristocrats for most means top in terms of history/tradition. Relative to Cavan Down are not Aristocrats in Ulster football, they started a tradition of winning much later (When you talk about success you also have to include not just provincial but All Ireland success). But in recent times when you see a county like Donegal winning a lot, compared to Donegal Down are Aristocrats. You also have to remember that many in the media where growing at a time (or hearing about from parents) when were Down winning a lot so still remember that. Their team of the 1960's made a big impression on people at the time. I have talked to a player who remembers playing against Down a few times in the 1990's and he said Down players think of themselves as aristocrats of football. This confidence (some would say arrogance but in sport having a small bit of arrogance is a great strength to have once it doesn't go to far) helps them a lot if they get to the big stage of the latter stage of the championship.

Ned, those three guys could be 70 years of age & they would still have more than enough for Cavan.
