Munster Final Stadium Options

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday and the attendance was roughly 30k and appeared fairly full, the stadium capacity is supposedly 48k. I really struggle to believe that another 18k people could have squeezed in there. Is 48k the correct capacity?

On a separate note, as a Tipp man I would love a trip down to Killarney for the final, what a novelty that would be. It might mean more travelling for both sets of supporters but surely people wouldn't complain about a weekend in the beautiful surroundings of Kerry.

Bring it Thurles, it's the main stadium in Munster. I really can't see why Waterford would have a problem it's like a home ground to them at this stage as most of there games are played in Thurles. Any Waterford supporter I have spoken to wants it on in Thurles.

48k is the correct capacity. I think the issue here is 31k was not the correct attendance!!

I heard Killarney been touted as a possibility weeks ago but with the Munster Football Final being played there I doubt it will be held there.
Looks like Limerick again for this one unless Waterford agree to play it in Thurles.
i have a feeling they may agree as the extra few miles to Limerick may not be appealing!!

the gaelic grounds capacity is actually 49,866
last few years for big games it was only allowed hold 44,000 because of health and safety reasons
i think its just a deceiving ground because both terraces hold more than the stands.
yeah also think its great chance to play the munster final in killarney this year
it holds 43 thousand so well big enough to cater for it
only problem munster council will say is compared to thurles or the gaelic grounds
it only has one stand and less than 10 thousand seated tickets
wouldnt bother me in thelsightest as i hate sitting at games
but a lot of people are picky in this day and age

Considering how few Tipp supporters made the trip to Limerick last Sunday, they'd hardly relish a journey all the way to Killarney!!

I agree, It would be a novelty, I think the trip home from Limerick on Clonmel road would be painful if we're all on way home, Especially if we lose...lol

Ridiculous to bring it to Killarney.I only remember 2 big hurling games played there since im watching hurlung in mid 80's.Im a traditionalist. It will always be a football ground to me.I hope it will be Limerick or Thurles.Regardless of what John Mullane says i think it would be in Waterfords best interest to play in Limerick.Trying to beat Tipp in a Munster final in Semple Stadium would be a tall order.

Strangely enough with Limerick only in the road from Tipp I know quite a few people who stayed at home and watched it.
the traffic arrangements in Limerick on Sunday were shameful.
None of the teams seemed to get a Garda escort and the limerick intermediate team had to park the bus in the Jetland shopping center and walk to the stadium. I know it was only 5 minutes but this is no way to treat top class players whether they be Senior , Minor , Intermediate , U.21 etc.
traffic on the way out from Limerick is also abysmal. Now I had parked myself near the train station so was well out of the way and took some back roads home via Roxboro but I know a few people sitting in traffic for ages.
if the final is played in Limerick you will have all the Waterford & potentially West / South Tippeary heading into the N24 and that will be a disaster.
North - Mid Tippeary could at least head onto the M7 and go via Castletroy up past the Parkway so Limerick will be a complete bottleneck on that Sunday.

It would do great to promote hurling in county Kerry plus Killarney is one of the greatest places ever to play a match, the craic in the town as well is fantastic. The pitch is massive would be bigger than thurles but we wouldn't have the capacity in the stand though.

on second thoughts
I had look there and says it takes 2hrs 45mins from waterford city to killarney
didnt realise it was that length of time to drive seems very long for the geographical distance between them
and over 2hrs from tipp town to killarney
so yeah be a bit of an unneccassary trek to take them both on in fairness
thurles it is id say

I wouldn't see it as ridiculous. That there has been very few hurling games there is disappointing.
It is primarily a gaelic ground but it would be fantastic to see a top class hurling game there

Or North/Mid tipp people could go in to gaelic ground via birdhill/parteen and avoid the traffic that way...
Poor form not to have teams getting garda escort...
South/West Tipp wouldn't have to go in that way ....

I think it should be in Thurles. Like the Ulster final is always in Clones and no teams complain playing Monaghan there. Killarney would be a novelty though, last game I can remember there was Tipp/Cork 03/04?

game is in Thurles, Waterford made a few demands and they have been met so the game is in Thurles

Hill16no1man you say people are picky in this day and age yet you then go and say you hate sitting at matches. How picky is that!

Most people prefer sitting at matches because they have kids or over 50's in their group. It's perfectly fine. They'd hardly Pay extra for their ticket without a proper reason .
L
Each to their own but don't be calling the kettle black!!

Anyway hill Is correct . The ground is deceiving because it's terrace is so big. They're were large chunks of the tipperary end that had only people on the barriers . Considering the number of steps between each barrier that's only a 5th full in that area . Behind the goal up the top half would be the only place that was full. If you had that density across the whole terrace you'd be looking at an extra 8k.

I work in Waterford and any of the hurling folk i work with want it in thurles,Waterford play every Munster championship game there anyway outside of games against tipperary and limerick would be a nightmare for traffic

Will the Munster Final gate receipts go to the GAA, The Tipperary Board or split between Tipp and Waterford? Are match tickets going to be given to the clubs or is it a Centra / Supervalue job again?
