Hurling going soft

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Was a good game yesterday but what annoyed me was that the instances that led to the sending off in the Clare v Limerick game.
On both sides they rolled around the ground like they wer shot.
I know it happens in soccer and has been seen in football but surely not the hurling.

Yes sadly it's happening in hurling aswell two sending offs that wouldn't of happened if the players stayed on there feet, the Limerick player getting a bandage on his head was an embarrassment to the game of hurling after being tapped on the chin.

Yes hurlers don't dive, or feign injury, or pull and drag, or drag their men to the ground to win frees, or handpass, or engage in sledging.

They truly are the king of kings.

I wonder is the reactions we see any reflection of the refereeing? What I mean is that I have watched a lot of the games in the NHL and then the Championship games and to be honest you might as well not have a ref there as the rules are not being applied and foul after foul being waved on or just ignored. Is it the case that players now feel they have to show they are hurt to get any sort of reaction out of the ref? At the end of the day both red cards were by the rule book red cards but would they have seen red if they hadn't reacted the way they did? Just a thought.

May seem like an over reaction but hurling authorities should punish play acting beforte it becomes common in the sport.
It has crept in more every year in football for the last 10 years.....

It's bad when you see a tank of a brute for Glasgow diving in the Ulster rugby match so for the best hurling should nip this in the bud

I think Donnellan had to go.He struck the Limerick player under the chin.Any strike on the head area is a definate red card. The moving of the helmet can cause further damage.
The second red was a joke.It happens in just about every game.I remember Shefflin coming in for some heavy treatment when introduced v Limerick last year.Did he fall to the ground? Not a chance. He gave as good as he got.No nastiness and the crowd loved it.The Clare lad falling to the ground seemed to make the referees mind up.A very harsh red.

I believe the second red would not have been given if the first red had not. what I mean is that I often see referees trying to even up the playing numbers and this results in some very soft reds.

cudederocket I'd like to see how long you'd remain standing if you got the sharp end of a hurl jabbed into your ribcage or solar plexus. That red card was deserved

From the county that gave us a hardier bunch of lads like Sylvie Linnane, Peter Finnerty, Tony Keady, Michael Coleman, Brendan Lynsky we get this;

I'd like to see how long you'd remain standing if you got the sharp end of a hurl jabbed into your ribcage or solar plexus. That red card was deserved

No wonder Galway have gone soft, line out that big Loughrea full forward and you might start to win again :-)

Neither were reds the play acting from the players got both men sent off, as I said if both players stayed on there feet there'd of been no red cards.

Maroon,i dont know what kind of hurling your used to playing but that goes on in every game.If you agree with that red card then you would agree with 10 red cards every game.Just after reading Ger Loughnanes piece in the Star and he thinks it was ridiculous.Probably the softest red card ive ever seen. And believe me i watch a lot of hurling.

Clondalkin,a player has to go for striking with the hurley around the head area. Its not even up for debate.

Ofside Rule makes a good point. If I were a coach, I'd be telling players to make sure they get the free. Hurling refs don't blow unless somebody is nearly killed. If a player is fouled, there's nothing wrong with him drawing attention to that. Shane O Donnell gave a good exhibition of it yesterday. On one occassion he was being held, he made absolutely sure that the ref saw it, by making it look much worse than it was. If he hadn't done that his opponants would have continued to blackgaurd him for the rest of teh game. What he did was absolutely correct in my opinion. He simply said; 'if you foul me, I'll make sure you don't get away with it.'

I think the point that people are confusing is what the rules are and what the refs blow from week to week. By the rules both were red cards. By how the rules are officiated around the Country both could have escaped reds. Did the reactions of the players contribute to the red cards? Probably. Should the reaction matter if it's a red card offence? No.

Cue it is when he barely taps him under the chin and the player goes down like he's been shot, never a red card.

as much as the Limerick man overreacted its hard to have sympathy for a player who raises the hurley towards an opponents head. It really is a page one rule if you want to last 70 minutes out there.

Succinct and the point Offside_Rule. Striking an opponent with a hurl is a dismissal. Them's da rules, hard man or no hard man

Awful game to watch no real skill apart from dat clare lads 2 cracking goals and young lad lynch with sublime touches. Two best players on d park. A dog fight with constant fouling. Let's hope there's better in the coming weeks disappointing start to the championship after all the hype.

I think it is going a little soft. The first red was fair enough because it was stupid. the second one was never a sending off. I think refs need to ref according to the offence and not the injury. There is no sport that i know of where the severity of an injury colours a referees decision. Totally stupid if it does...Not one decent shoulder yesterday.
