Timekeeping

(Oldest Posts First)

I don't understand why the current system hasn't been changed in time for this years Championship. The GAA keep saying that it's a cost issue, but what could the cost issue be? Ladies Gaelic football has used a hooter system for years, as has been used in the International rules whenever Ireland has hosted games, without there being a cost issue. The current system is a joke, when refs don't know how much to add on at the end, so they come up with a number(usually 2 or 3 minutes), and this doesn't include substitutions, so teams are almost being encouraged to time waste.

replays are the issue. Bring in the hooter and abolish replays. Its costly enough to follow your team and it only give the 2 teams a disadvantage as they have one less week to get ready for their next game.

This will affect me badly as i back 3-4 draws every weekend at usually 16/1 or so :)

Cost of implementing the hooter system to grounds.... what should be definition of how to add on injury time? Should there be procedure to add on time for all subs made etc..
I know in other sports that referees are told have 1 minute injury time in first half and 2 in second half unless you really really have to have more as "nothing good can happen in 5th minute of injury time"

How will the hooter system really change things??? Id rather change system of competition structure than just abolishing replays.

replays are outdated. Go to extra time and peanos to decide. Save the family man with his 3-4 kids and wife another expensive journey just to line the pockets of HQ. Also avoids one team having to wait an extra week or 2 to find out who they have to play in the next round. I know some people are scared of change in this country but we need to try new things and ideas or we will never know if they will work or we will like them :)

1 minute added time in today's Munster hurling championship game how on gods earth can that be right? Cavan player fouled 72.06 free kick taken at 72.30 then keeper takes a half minute to kick the ball out ref blows the whistle at exactly 73.00 so basically nothing happened in a minute yet the ref doesn't add at least 30 seconds on? Come on the players deserve better than that.

Refs do not have to add on any time for stoppages from free kicks and goal kicks.

The countdown clock works in ladies football with only a minimal cost. The rules need to outline clearly why the clock is stopped:
Substitutions
Injuries
Goalkeepers coming out to take frees

You could also add that the game only finishes when the ball crosses the opposing endline, but that's an optional extra.

I don't buy the "replay" argument used against the use of the clock: both games yesterday could easily have finished in a draw if more added time (as would be indicated by a countdown clock) had been allowed.
