Kerry's Systematic Fouling

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Joe Brolly has had a right cut off Kerry in his Gaelic Life column this week, accusing them of systematically fouling in the middle third of the field to avoid black cards.

What say you? Trenchant analysis or sour grapes?

Tactical fouling well within the rules of the game. Foul high up the pitch to set yourself up defensively.

God forbid you let them run up the field and kick a score!!!

Donegal had perfected this in 2012 and he was saying they were great. The man simply cant be taken at face value.

In fairness they're not doing anything any other county isn't indulging in.

Tactical fouling? They fouled plenty of times in scoring positions too! That's just called ill-discipline.

No "fouling" is within the rules of the game.

That's why they are called "fouls" and the same reason why the referee gives the other team a free kick when such "fouls" happens.

Mayo are without doubt one of the the most if not the most cynical teams in the country - how come that is never mentioned? There is a difference between numbers in defence and cynically fouling. It's two different issues. Mayo don't keep as many men back generally but because of this they often get caught on the break and have to resort to fouling and pulling down dragging in order to get everyone back! In AI final 2012 Eamonn McGee, Karl Lacey and Mark McHugh were almost decapitated in the first half - but obviously it didn't work on that occasion. And sure a couple of weeks back in Castlebar they were at the same craic again!

Brolly is right Kerry have been doing it for your years but knowbody would ever say it. The saviour of Football would be so cynical. They were hiding behind a reputation of this fantastic footballing county. Billy Morgan once said the most cynical team he ever came were his neighbours in the south. Kerry's performance (Fouling#) in the Semi final against Mayo was disgraceful deliberately starting rucks to waste time.

Ah poor Master , still bitter about getting fairly beaten in 2012 . I've always felt Mayo are the most cynical , they then come out with the poor man rhetoric of ' we must be cuter ' . There's other reasons why Mayo can't get over the finishing line ......

Whoever wins the AI generally gets tarnished with the 'cynical brush ' !

Kerry foul far out the pitch and block oppostion from taking quick frees very clever. Against Tyrone they contuninuly foul/blocked the runners coming through. This never gets highlighted by Spillnane who just blames Ulster tactics

The Master......

That's a bit rich coming from a mayo man..... Yous wouldn't be bad at yourselves,

The game in castlebar two weeks ago highlighted that this element of mayos game is still alive and kicking......

Systematic fouling ranges from slowing the game down by holding onto the ball when there is a free given against you, or stopping the man running out of his defense with the ball by dragging him, or both. This aspect of the game has been around a hell of a long time. Probably more noticeable now because all the counties are doing it.

Heavens above man do you not know you're not allowed say things like that about Mayo???
Mayo are great at starting things and then crying when someone does it better.....
Sure they're stilling crying over 96 and how Meath got Liam McHale sent off?? The fact he ran for 40 yards away to get involved had nothing to do with it!!!! Or the fact the blew a six point lead in both games had nothing to do with it either!!!!!
NO its was because Meath got McHale sent off that they lost!!!!

We can all play that game: who was it that got sent off for stamping in the 2013 All-Ireland quarter final again? Bit of selective memory loss, have we? Your hyperbole about the first half of that game is simply ridiculous, as if Donegal go round giving out sweets.

Getting back on topic, I didn't offer an opinion in the OP, but I wouldn't say that Kerry are particularly noteworthy in the cynicism stakes. Cynical, yes, but then, so are all of the top teams, at certain times and to a lesser or greater extent.

This isn't about us going ultra defensive, it's about your never ending habit of rewriting history.

Brolly exposed Mayo's cynical fouling in 2012 & Maurice Deegan put a stop to it early on by flashing a few yellow cards.

You have never forgiven him for this, which is your right, but it does become boring after 3 years.
