Average Week of an Inter-county player

(Oldest Posts First)

I meant to ask this a few weeks back when Brolly was on the airwaves complaining about players over-training. He mentioned some county players training ten times a week!!? How would that be possible? Could somebody please post an average week for a county player? Whether its in the depth's of winter or a week in sunny july, just how many times does a player train a week?

I heard of a Cavan footballer who has to travel from Limerick to Cavan for training of he didn't he wouldn't be dropped. No consideration from the management about the players education or the side effects of driving at 3 am in the morning to make it back for college in the morning.

I would say that has players train about 6 days a week., but I include a match in that. Collective training on pitch twice a week. Gym work on other days. But the id say the 10 times number comes from recovery sessions and flexibility sessions also which wouldn't exactly be training in the conventional sense. I'd say that during championship frequency and heaviness of sessions reduce, especially the week before a big game. it's all about maintaining fitness gains at that stage. But then with some teams with 5 or 6 weeks between matches they would put in some tough sessions then.

Listen I play junior football. We train twice a week and I do 2 other sessions myself in the gym. Add a match at the weekend and that's 5 sessions. I don't think it's a big deal that inter county train twice as much as me.

Check out training sessions 16 year old swimmers do. That's tough.

I dont have an issue with the training as most lads know exactly what they are signing up for an are usually on the panel because they are ultra competitive by nature, so are happy in that environment. However, the policing of sessions by SOME managers doesn't sit well with me. All to often, little consideration is shown to the individual circumstanses within the panel. Two years ago Antrim lost three key players because the manager would not allow them to attend a family funeral and travel seperatly to the game. Clare have now needlessly punished two players who have quite rightly walked away. There seems to be a one way street for respect with some managers, they demand it from their players at all times but dont return it in the same fashion. Obviously there are plenty of good managers and they are the ones that get this balance right, ie Jim McGuinness was known to talk to employers on behalf of his players to help them find employment etc, these are the type of things that create unity within a dressing room and some should take note!

That's what he tells you Damo.

Meanwhile Damo Junior is down the laneways and street corners drinking flagons of cheap cider and trying to impress the mots every night.

In a typical week during the national league you would have a match on the Sunday, recovery would be Monday, swimming etc. Tuesday & Thursday would be collective sessions with the squad and I suspect gym sessions on the Weednesday and Friday with rest on the Saturday. Obviously it is a massive commitment for anyone but it's not only training sessions that require your effort, its psychological and always thinking about the last training session or last match. Making sure your diet is right and trying to balance all that in with your personal life, family, work/college.
