Motion 16: (Clondegad Clare)
It's often said that football at the moment resembles basketball. This motion seeks to eliminate that comparison and calls for the ball to be kicked after two consecutive movements by hand or fist.

Would this being passed lead to lads soloing the ball into each other's arms (i.e. 3 yard kick pass to ensure possession is retained)?

Easier said than done. If its tried it increases the risk of interception and turnover of possession. I support this chnage, althou in mhy opinion it should be 3 handpasses then kick pass.

If so then leave football the way it is! ;-)

And how in the name of god is a referee meant to enforce that rule?

Yew Tree is correct.. how in the honour of God is a ref to enforce this... it's not broken.. leave well enough alone

I think the "counting" aspect of this would be harder for players than for referees, to be honest. Refs already count the number of steps a player takes & if he hops the ball twice, 3 catches in hurling etc.

Yew Tree is correct. Preposterous proposal that would be unenforceable. Handpass is not the problem. Bad teams will always make the game look bad no matter what the rules. What is the origin of this motion? I'll bet it is not from any club/county that has remote chance of winning anything!

On re-reading I see that I was correct!

The refs did a good job on the counting in the international rules. The problem is not the county refs or even the top lads within a county but you will get some refs counting, walking and blowing the whistle could endanger their lives.

Anyway the issue is not hand passing the issue is not playing the ball forward.

i think the biggest problem with introducing a rule like this is that it would only encourage 'swarm' type defending. If players knows that the player with the ball can only kick it away then it's going to be even easier to put pressure on him to prevent the kick, leading to more fouling of the ball and an even slower and more cumbersome game.
I honestly can't understand the constant desire to change rules in the GAA to affect change in the game. If any aspect of the game is being problematic, be it hand-passing, swarm defence, 3 man midfields or any other innovation that we have seen since the game began it's up to the other counties to find a way to beat it. This is how games evolve, not by constant meddling with the rules.

Great idea, bring it in on trial and see if it works, all sports need proactive management to evolve

Only way I could see something like this work i.e. limiting the number of handpasses to whatever, is to introduce the mark to encourage more and better kick passing.

Good to see that elitism/snobberyisming is alive and well in the Organisation. And the Lord said on to the GAA, only they who have any remote chance of winning thy coveted trophies shall have a say in thy Organisation. And then he revelaed his glory.

This is presumably a misguided attempt to rescue football from alleged 'negative' tactics. People are forgetting that Donegal have superb players, have huge intelligence on and off the field, and a devastating counter-attack. As had Tyrone when they were accused of negativity when they were successful.

Simple fact is that bad teams with a bad attitude will make the game look bad. The sort of desperate handball stuff with every man behind the ball we see at lower levels is a function of the lack of all the things that Donegal and Tyrone have or had. Not a function of the rules.

The 70s are remembered for the great games between Dublin, Kerry, Offaly, Meath and Cork, and indeed the Derry team of the mid 70s. But having seen most Dublin games from that time there were plenty of truly dreadful teams who tried to drag the game into the gutter despite the rules then being more conducive than ever to open attacking football.

Look at other sports like NFL and rugby and basketball. Good teams will thrive under any rules and any system. Bad teams will be bad teams under any rules and under any system. Games are won on the field and on court not in committee rooms. Just imagine the dogs dinner we would have if this rule was applied to certain counties!

Offside, you of all people should realize that attitude accounts for a lot. Hurling as well as football :-)
