To me this will not aid the sitaution in Leinster and will instead make it harder for these counties run off internal club matches due to more inter county games. We need an open draw the current situation whereby the semi finalists from one year are seeded the following year & hekept apart basically means they are heavy favourites to once again qualify for the sim finals thus creating a top 4 tream situation in Leinster. Does anyone else agree? hurler in the ditch (Louth) - Posts: 439 - 03/02/2015 10:14:55 1689502 Link 0 |
A and b championship needed, with promotion opportunities. Gap between strong and weak is so wide now that lads will lose interest. sponger (Wicklow) - Posts: 2896 - 03/02/2015 11:48:32 1689540 Link 0 |

I think a round robin championship for Leinster is a good idea, but all 11 teams should be included, maybe two groups with the top four teams making the semi finals. The provincial system varies from province to province,Ulster is an open draw, Munster is seeded, Connacht open draw, no doubt someone will correct me, if I got it wrong. Why not have a standard system for all championships? thelongridge (Offaly) - Posts: 1706 - 03/02/2015 12:30:30 1689572 Link 0 |
Can't really see how this would help and anyway didn't they already try a round robin in Leinster back in 2000 and it came to nothing. I just see it as kicking the can down the road, the football championship needs to be restuctured across the board, not just in Leinster, the sooner we start hearing genuine debate on that from HQ the better because I'm not really interested in trivial tweaks. Don't see point in this. Either put in a second tier championship country wide or don't. No point pretending the gap is wider in Leinster than it is for Leitrim, Fermanagh or Waterford. Assume this is being done because the four semi-finalists have been same for last few years. But then this is also true of the All-Ireland series, isn't it? doublehop (Kildare) - Posts: 4172 - 03/02/2015 20:28:31 1689817 Link 0 |
Round robin Leinster championship. How does watching Dublin hammer 10 teams instead of 3 improve anything? tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1091 - 04/02/2015 09:51:28 1689878 Link 0 |
Or maybe some Leinster teams should get their act together and own house in order, especially a big footballing county like Meath.Fact is,there has always being weak counties in Leinster, because we have so many of them.Only Dublin and Meath won the Leinster championships from the early 80's to 1996,I would argue Leinster has always had this problem, only difference is the demise of Meath. ziggy320001 (Meath) - Posts: 2432 - 04/02/2015 10:16:17 1689887 Link 0 |

Can't see the point in this. League standings pretty much tell the story of football in Leinster at the moment. Largest province with biggest population, 1 team in Div 1, 4 in Div 2, 2 in Div 3 and 4 in Div 4. I would reckon that at least one of Meath/Laois/Westmeath will be relegated from Div 2, Kildare may get promotion, strong possibility of both Louth and Wexford being relegated to Div 4 (both seem in disarray), decent chance of Offaly getting promotion from Div 4. That would leave 5 Leinster teams in Div 4 next year, kinda speaks for itself. moylagh (Meath) - Posts: 484 - 04/02/2015 11:24:09 1689924 Link 0 |
yes Leinster football in disarray so how is making weaker teams play each other more often to win the right to play one of the bigger seeded teams going to improve things? hurler in the ditch (Louth) - Posts: 439 - 04/02/2015 11:58:47 1689946 Link 0 |
Should just split county Dublin up. Officially it isn't even a county anymore, its made up of a few counties. Financially its being treated the same as a province from central council. We could put Dublin in as a 5th team in the interprovincials each year. supermon (Monaghan) - Posts: 1073 - 05/02/2015 12:57:06 1690357 Link 0 |
If I was from a weaker county I know id rather be training all winter for a round robin series where I had a decent chance of winning a few games before facing a big side with some momentum, rather than just been drawing to face Dublin and almost certain defeat in the 1st round. In my view the seeding in Munster worked for the weaker teams last year, I also think each provincial council should have the freedom to arrange their championship however they see fit. Soma, if you were an Inter County player from a weaker county would you not think that the 7 games against teams of approximately similar standards in the league would be of more value to your developement than waiting for a shot against a team like Dublin, Mayo or Kerry that all operate at a higher level. AHP (Dublin) - Posts: 323 - 05/02/2015 16:01:32 1690433 Link 0 |
I wouldn't AHP. League games are played in February/March/April but every footballer ultimately trains for the summer and championship. A team like Longford/Wicklow/Carlow etc, if they got a bit of momentum and enthusiasm within their own county, could give Kildare/Meath etc a real rattle. However if they are drawn against them in the first round - well just look at Carlow last year! Compare that to Waterford and Clare last year - Clare beat Waterford in a replay and with this momentum ran Kerry close, hammered Carlow and were unlucky to lose to Kildare. Waterford had no momentum and lost to Carlow in the first round of the qualifiers. Momentum is vital for weaker counties, having seeding or a round-robin arrangement allows them to get some. No round robins for me - omahant (USA) - Posts: 2535 - 27/02/2015 21:20:29 1697553 Link 0 |
Some comments. Define the early 80's. Offaly won 3 Leinster SF titles 1980-1982 incl. True Dublin and Meath shared titles from 1983 to 1996. There was renewal from 1997 to 2010, until Dublin became the dominant team again. There have always been weaker teams in all provinces, including Leinster, but the problem now is the gap is widening between the weak and strong counties. thelongridge (Offaly) - Posts: 1706 - 27/02/2015 21:44:53 1697561 Link 0 |
