MORE money to watch GAA on TV

(Oldest Posts First)

Right so a good few GAA c'ship games are on Sky. I fork out money to get Sky only to realise that the Allianz leagues are on Setanta and that is not part of any Sky package. If I want to see league games I'll have to fork out another €22 a month on top of my Sky subscription. I think this is a joke. Its doing nothing to promote GAA.

These games weren't shown at all before this. So pay to watch them, pay to go see them, or pay nothing and do exactly what you were doing before...

Good jaysus SmellyBadger, are telling us that you both unaware that league games were on Setanta and that Setanta is a seperate subscription to skysports? If so you're years too late moaning about either of those things, TheMaster has explained your options very well, choose one of them.

I subscribed to Sky Sports for the summer then cancelled after the GAA championship season ended. Simples.

Incidentally, I see that when Sky's contract is up in 2017 BT Sports may be interested in bidding for coverage rights. I hope it doesn't end up like the rugby & soccer where you don't know who's covering what game!

As in previous years TG4 will show at least as many (if not more) league matches as Setanta. So as other poster mentioned it just a continuation of the status quo, TG4 will also show a decent highlights package on the Monday night so the non-subscription coverage isn't too bad

And when they raise the prices, youll say the same, and when they raise them again youll say the same again and so on so forth.
It probably wont be long before EVERY championship match is on a subscription channel, and if pay per view came into play in the future, youll say the same again.
A line has to be drawn somewhere.

For the league fair enough. The coverage of live games was poor. TG4 did their bit but there were loads of decent games they couldn't show live so having those games on pay per view is fair game. Nothing lost.

The championship is different though. Sky in effect bought TV3's rights plus the GAA cut down on games been shown live, so Sky are not showing live games that otherwise would not be shown. That is the issue. They also have 2 quarter finals exclusive live if I remember correctly over their 3 year package and sky being sky are not going to be happy with just that. They are going to want to more exclusive games to increase subscriptions and it could end up where only the All Irelands and possibly the provincial finals being on terestrial tv.

Times move on and Sky do decent coverage but that is not the issue. It is moving towards more pay per view and anyone who says they are just showing extra games are incorrect. Yes people can go the matches but that is very expensive for any family.
Also the GAA should look after the older generation who can't afford sky or couldn't even use it if they could afford.

It seems to me that although the GAA is gaining financially it is alienating many of its members.

Well I can afford it but Im still not paying. I ll listen to it on the radio. I would encourage all GAA supporters to do the same. If the GAA makes money for sky theyll go with it, if it doesnt theyll drop the GAA like a bad habit.
For what its worth I dont rate skys coverage anyway. pretty much Tv3 with rachel wyse.
Guys like Jamsie got plenty of stick when they were with tv3. Now theyve moved to sky they have magically become innovative and well informed?
Gimme a break.

Who's saying that though? the anti sky brigade have had that old chestnut on loop since the sky deal was announce yet I can't recall anybody saying that all of a sudden the Tv3 lads have become brilliant, maybe some people said it, I don't know but they'd be the in the minority.

Personally I was all for the sky deal just because it has the potential to get our games out to a far larger audience, wasn't expecting any great innovations and I couldn't care less about the pundits, couldn't care less about them on RTE either.

I was all for the Sky deal too just because RTE have been on a crusade to kill off Gaelic Football over the past number of years with constant negativity. They turned it in to a bit of a laughing stock, horribly defensive, all pulling and dragging, not enough kicking.. Then TV3 came on the scene but that didn't bother the RTE lads they just kept slating the game but when Sky came on the scene they had to suit up.

If RTE analysed Gaelic football properly I'd much rather they pushed Sky out of the market but they don't. The fact is players now are stronger, faster more skillful than when Spillane and co played. More importantly players are playing the game smart using their heads maintaining posession, the game has evolved.

Defensive and counter attacking systems aren't just be bad bad bad. They need to be analysed and evaluated too with analysis on how to beat them. To give Sky credit they try to do this and despite coming out an saying they would stick to their guns the RTE boys changed tac and were noticeably more positive last year.

It's a real pity some of our games had to go pay per view for this to happen but it might be for the greater good.

dahayeser,

"The fact is players now are stronger, faster more skillful than when Spillane and co played. More importantly players are playing the game smart using their heads maintaining posession, the game has evolved."

Sure, the game has evolved but to say players are more skillful now is highly debatable. Yet for all the professional training & preparation, seemingly only 2 or maybe 3 players on any team these days (Kerry & Dublin aside) seems to be able to consistently kick the ball over the bar. Perhaps that was the way it always was but everyone else's job now is to track back & meticulously work the ball up the field to put these "specialists" in a scoring position.Just look at how normal it is to see a goalkeeper come up the field to take a '45. The best method of free-taking is still the kick from a placed ball yet it's quite rare to see even it though it mainly requires practice.

Is it easier to train players to be super strong & fit than actually coach them the skills of the game & to teach them how/when best to use those skills in a game?

Keeper . Stephen bray, Michel Newman, graham Reilly, Eamonn Wallace, Brian menton , Andrew tormey.
All from Meath and all very capable of kicking points with ease from outfield. Its this type of bland sweeping generalizing that is giving football a bad name, only Dublin and kerry my eye.

Forgive my ignorance, Royaldunne. Meath's footballing woes of late are obviously not in the attacking department seeing as ye're clearly so well-equipped up front.

Have just seen that GAAGO will in fact be showing league games this year, which is a welcome development. I think they'll also be showing the Sunday Game (evening/highlights version) this year as well, which wouldn't be too shabby at all.

Certainly not up front. Our problems stem from not giving them enough ball, also majority of those i mentioned are only on second year bray and Reilly obvious exceptions. Our problems are half back line, and until recently midfield. Give them lads the ball and they will score.
