How do GAA attendances compare with other sports in the country? Some people have an opinion that Irish people like the one off big event. An example being a low crowd for Clare v Cork in last year's Munster championship and then Croke Park sold out for both hurling final days. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7755 - 16/10/2014 20:06:26 1664484 Link 0 |
be easier to get an accurate figure if we had some sort of proper league competition which was the main thing for fans to attend...the knockout competition is our main thing now with obviously the further you get into the competition naturally the crowds get bigger fabio8 (USA) - Posts: 2182 - 16/10/2014 20:15:22 1664494 Link 0 |
irish people do love big events though..for instance check out our attendances in soccer in the next few qualifiers if we manage to beat scotland or get a good result..bandwagon will be in full swing...nothing wrong with that at all and good to see just be huge contrast with an empty aviva we have seen on numerous occasions recently fabio8 (USA) - Posts: 2182 - 16/10/2014 20:20:38 1664500 Link 0 |
Association football games with countries like Gibraltar and Oman are not likely to draw crowds. Scotland, Poland, Germany and England will see big crowds alright. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7755 - 16/10/2014 20:33:58 1664509 Link 0 |
if the games mattered and teams at full strength then yes the crowds would be a lot better than what is typical for your average league game fabio8 (USA) - Posts: 2182 - 16/10/2014 21:19:17 1664527 Link 0 |
We crave elite level competition, seeing the absolute pinnacle of athleticism and sporting talent. It's human nature. bob_dolphin (Limerick) - Posts: 694 - 17/10/2014 09:23:36 1664565 Link 0 |

the reason people dont go to matches early in the hurling championship is because they arnt knockout.if they were they would be sell outs.. kavvie (Clare) - Posts: 504 - 17/10/2014 13:55:51 1664688 Link 0 |
GAA attendances are alright. Good for championship and poor for league. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1091 - 17/10/2014 16:02:30 1664741 Link 0 |
The way for the GAA to get more people to matches is to have teams of equal levels playing against each other in a tiered competition for the top trophy. Revamp the championship. tyroneed (Tyrone) - Posts: 753 - 17/10/2014 18:10:28 1664784 Link 0 |

I firmly believe the league needs to be scrapped and replaced with a league/championship all in one set up. BUT if games were every two weeks in the championship for teams instead of three to four weeks would attendances drop simply for economical reasons shaggykev (Donegal) - Posts: 184 - 18/10/2014 16:25:36 1664967 Link 0 |
On the other hand shaggykev, its very difficult to build up a support and attract new fans when a county only has 3 or 4 important matches a year. joncarter (Galway) - Posts: 2692 - 18/10/2014 16:36:28 1664970 Link 0 |
Good point Joncarter and if the matches were played home and away instead of a jaunt to Clones for a neutral match, it would probably be better again. Better to have smaller home grounds filled to the rafters than heading to a neutral venue unless demand greatly exceeds supply shaggykev (Donegal) - Posts: 184 - 18/10/2014 17:11:54 1664983 Link 0 |
agreed joncarter..the more competitive games each team has the better..and i mean games that matter fabio8 (USA) - Posts: 2182 - 18/10/2014 19:06:06 1665007 Link 0 |
Im sure the players would be happy with it too. More games, less training. joncarter (Galway) - Posts: 2692 - 18/10/2014 19:12:30 1665010 Link 0 |
If the early season 'league' stages retained a home and away format I'm sure then you would get big crowds all through. If a neutral venue was required then I would say crowds would be even smaller than current league games. Tracer_Bullet (Cork) - Posts: 2 - 18/10/2014 21:34:24 1665054 Link 0 |
Id like to see the leagues and championship played alongside one another ala the heineken cup and pro 12. It would mean a glut of games during the Summer and a shorter intercounty season. The season as it is is too overstretched, and its affecting clubs. joncarter (Galway) - Posts: 2692 - 18/10/2014 21:52:03 1665059 Link 0 |
