What county is Mayo's main rival?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Kerry's main rival in the Munster football championship is Cork. The capital's main rival in the Leinster football championship is Meath. It's hard to gauge the biggest rivalry in Ulster though from a thread during the summer - Monaghan v Cavan appears to be the biggest rivalry.

Who is Mayo's main football rival in Connaught?

The real question is though is it an unfair advantage to have a rival at all?

Galway traditionally but will be Roscommon for the next 4-5 years as they seem more capable of pushing on from recent underage success than Galway do.

Yes, Cavan Monaghan is a good rivalry in Ulster although Armagh/Down and Armagh/Tyrone are both big rivalries.

Mayo and Galway would be the tradition rivals in the west but Mayo and Roscommon is the old firm of the west.

Mayo are their own worse enemies.

Galway and Roscommon would be our main rivals but countrywide i'd say it's the Kingdom of Kerry, Mayo have played Kerry 21 times in AllIreland semi finals and finals with Kerry winning 17 to Mayo's 4, so while Kerry aren't too bothered about us it's always a big match for Mayo people

Depends on who you ask in Mayo I'd imagine.

Somebody from Shrule will say Galway, someone from Ballagh might say Ros.

Like in Tipperary. If you're from Ballina you won't want to lose to Clare, if you're from Ballyporeen it's Cork, Killenaule etc will say Kilkenny and so on...

Roundball its not as simple as that.A tipp person from Ballina may well want to beat Clare because they share a border, but that same person may prefer to beat Cork or Kilkenny if they had a choice.Im from west Dublin, very close to Kildare border, but i have a soft spot for the lillies.I take no real pleasure in beating them.My favourite county to beat would be Cork.

Roscommon have been Mayo's only rivals over the last few years in Connacht and I can't see the situation changing in the next few years..

Galway's performances against Mayo in the last couple of years have been abysmal and I can't see them improving anytime soon.

I've always believed it was Galway. Some people would seem to rule them out as being a hurling county.

I was surprised to see Mayo folks saying Roscommon were their main rivals and not Galway. Just googled it and Galway have 9 All Irelands compared to the paltry 3 Mayo have, so can see why Roscommon and their 2 All Irelands are the big rivals out west.

Traditionally Mayo and Galway are the top two in Connacht, hence the rivalry, just like the other provinces, with Ulster being the exception because instead of a top two they have a top 6 or 7!

So Mayo dimiss our Munster rivals on hurling grounds but not their own provincial rival of Galway? Interesting.

@Roundball

Ballyporeen is also close to the Waterford and Limerick borders so I say its not just Cork that they would want to beat.
