Cavan's ....... Big Chance

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I know Cavan had a tough 2014 which I think will not be the norm over the next 5 years. 2015 has pitted them against a tired miles on the clock Monaghan team in a full Breffi Park. I strongly fancy even at this stage for Cavan to proceed and from there reach the Ulster Final. Cavan teams are very difficult to beat in Ulster finals with their great tradition so I suspect 2015 could be a big year for Cavan football.

And Monaghan's record against Cavan is nothing to be shouting about.

I feel Cavan need to open up a bit more to beat Monaghan. They were dire in the 2nd half against Roscommon. Without a fluid attack they won't against get past Monaghan, I feel the fitness of Mackey will be crucial. However I would rate McManus and Hughes better then Keating and Dunne and would expect Monaghan to pull through, though not without a struggle.

It's as good a draw as Cavan could have hoped for and I think they will give one big push against Monaghan but that will be it. Maybe they'll have a one off big win and then sneak into the final but the evidence so far is that Cavan are well off the required pace for senior inter-county success. Maybe a good league will help them along though.

Worse for Cavan is that their 4 Ulster U21s in a row is also a record of failure to convert to all-ireland success. The Tyrones etc. of this world usually get over the line. For the last 50 or so years the Cavans haven't. Even in their heyday they lost a huge amount more than they won. If you're not doing it then the problem tends to be in the forward line. If the forwards aren't good enough for U-21 they won't be good enough for senior. Monaghan have the better forwards and contrary to what has been said above I think only 3 of the Monaghan starting team against Dublin in the 1/4 final were over 30, so I don't think that's a worry for them.

If Cavan want to be taken seriously then they've a lot to prove starting with promotion from Div 2 as winners. Losing the league final last year was just another big game failure and that's a catching habit.

Ah yes the old tired, aging Monaghan argument. Been a while since I seen that. If you look through the team you'll see it's alot younger than many make it out to be, with older lads not relied upon as much as they used to be, or simply not starting. The one exception is midfield, where Lennon is still important, but plenty of youth in defence and attack.

Having said that, this will be tough for Monaghan, these local derbys always are. But because of that, the minds will be focused going in and there won't be any hint of complacency. If we do lose, it won't be because Monaghan have too many "miles on the clock".

Cavan need a new manager and a new direction, plenty of very talented footballers and loads of underage successes but they are being tied up and restricted by an excessively defensive "system"

I can see cavan being like limerick u21 hurlers they could go into the wilderness after all the underage success, it means zero in senior look at Kerry and then galway?!

Cavan style of football at senior gives them a big chance of winning nothing. Need to attack with purpose. The poor excuse for football they have been playing for the last few years will deliver nothing and cause good players to lose interest.

I tell you what Jim McGuinness wouldurrent manager keeping all the players happy but it's a result business. Make or break for him next year.

Of the div 2 teams only Kildare really impressed me last year as a team who could do damage if they got it together so there is scope for Cavan to do well. Making div 1 is a serious boost to a team.

Funny enough I do fancy Cavan to beat MONAGHAN. I also fancy Fermanagh to beat Antrim. So I take either Cavan/ Fermanagh to reach the Ulster final anything can happen on the other side of the draw and would not like to predict anything. But Cavangot a good draw comparing to TYRONE/Donegal. So if they want to make a breakthrough they should try and reach next year's Ulster final. They might not win it but they would be in the last 12 and could even reach the quarter finals.

Looking at the draw it's a great chance for Cavan to make the final but in all fairness, anything can happen between now and the start of the c'ship in reagards to injuries/players moving away etc.. Shercock's Killian Clarke back will be a great bonus for 2015 though. Mackay back fully fit will also help but going by their awful showing against Roscommon in Breffni last year, Hyland really needs to change strategy in some way for next year. Their negativity cost them last year but hopefully their previous u-21 champions can inspire them to a final. After a promising 2013 Monaghan fizzled out last year so a shock could well be on!

It's a chance for Cavan to start playing a bit of decent football again - beyond that I don't see an Ulster title this year either. It'll take a year to get fully rid of the crappy game plan that was imposed on the players. I'd have hopes for the following year because we have some good players coming through and the older lads will just have to step up or get dropped. That said the Monaghan match will be a game of real championship football - it's seldom anything else. Breffni Park has a capacity of 30,000 and I'd expect it to be almost full.

Why would it take a year? They got to the All Ireland Quarter finals last year in the first year of the system under Peter Donnelly.

It hasn't all been crappy football either, 2013 in Derry ,Cavan played some excellent football - but when you suffer losses to key players like Cavan did this year Mackey, Dunne injured , Killian Clarke Ronan Flanagan Dara McVeety in the US, the teams suffers

Next year (2015) Cavan will have a new coach, probaly Liam McHale and new ideads to the table, a more attacking threat was always going to happen next year anyways, Terry Hyland said as much - that the team would evolve.

hard to say, Cavan, Monaghan games go right down to the wire,my friend s in Monaghan always seem to fear Tyrone, Cavan, Monaghan on paper look like getting back to an Ulster final, but i believe Cavans young players could come in to their own in Breffni park. Antrim or Fermanagh will be waiting in the long grass for either of these teams, i think Ulster 2015, will be wide open, nothing much between any of the 9 teams, roll on 2015.

They are nowhere near an Ulster championship.

I said they'd be out first round this year and was right and it'll be the same again this year.
