In deference to that Tipp team of the 1960s, I think it is unfair on them to compare with other lesser teams like the Kilkenny team of the 00s. That Tipp team revolutionized the game. They were the epitome of sports science, tactical nous and awareness, discipline, professionalism. I could go on.

My Top 10

1. Tipp 1960s
2. Blank
3. blank
..
9.blank
10. Kilkenny 00s

To answer the actual question. Possibly 40 years ago- Offaly were not in the top 10 (perhaps they are not now). There has been very little change in the pecking order.

Over the years only 9 counties have won the Liam McCarthy Cup. In football 16 teams have won the Sam Maguire. 3 counties in both codes have won All-irelands without the trophies.

Tipp in the 60s won 4 all Ireland 7 munsters and 5 leagues

Kilkenny in the 00s won 7 all Irelands 9 Leinsters and 5 leagues

Cork in the 40s won 5 all Irelands 5 Munsters and 3 league titles

Cork and Tipp had no backdoor contenders to deal with. Kilkenny of the 00s are the greatest hurling team without any shadow and the only people who wont agree are people from Tipp Cork or those who believe that the hurling of that generation was superior

I've seen action from hurling matches from the 1960s on TG4 and the standard was shocking. Most of the players could barely puck the ball out of their way. From what I've seen, the standard seemed to rise from the 1970s on with the emergence of very skilful Kilkenny and Cork teams that decade, and it's been improving ever since.

Ballydalane, you're not comparing like for like and of course hurling is entirely different to what it is today and in twenty years time some might see todays games as 'shocking' can't even handpass to a teammate etc, etc.

Sports evolve with time, so enjoy the here and now, especially with you being a Kilkenny man.

I think it's more realistic to divide Kilkenny into 2 eras, 98-2005 and 2006-14. Although I'd say the latter were better and more successful, I preferred watching the former, a more open style, less physical maybe, but with more stylish' hurlers like mcevoy, larkin, byrne, Carter who weren't around later
