Last shock All-Ireland SFC winning team?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Following Kerry's run to the All-Ireland final against all the odds, it got me wondering - who were the last shock All-Ireland SFC winning team?

Galway were rank outsiders in '98 and '01. Possibly Armagh in '02 were rank outsiders as well?

I would think the following in my opinion.

Derry 1993 - Unexpected to beat Dublin & Cork but a great side none the less
Down 1994 - Came from no where again a last hurrah for most of the 1991 team

Kerry 2009 - Didn't see them winning Sam from a long way out thought after 2008 they would fold & nearly did. If they played anyone else bar Cork in that final I think they would have lost.
Cork 2010 - Just didn't think they would have the bottle after 2009 loss to Kerry.

Armagh in 2002 may have been a shock to some in the Kingdom but it wasn't to the rest of us.

They'd being narrowly beaten by the eventual All-Ireland Champions in the 3 previous years. Meath in 1999, Kerry after a replay in 2000 and Galway by a last minute point in 2001.

Very few of the teams mentioned were "rank outsiders"
Galway were not rank outsiders in '98 because they were up against Kildare who hadn't won a leinster in 80 odd years and in '01 they had won an all Ireland 3 years before with much the same players - hardly a shock.
Armagh in '02 were rank outsiders - most people thought they hadn't the bottle to win it
Derry 1993 - had beaten the defending champions Donegal and Ulster was the best province at the time.
Down 1994 - had one it in 1991 with the same team and Ulster was the best province at the time.
Kerry 2009 - Kerry could never be outsiders against Cork in Croke Park with one of the best teams Kerry ever had.
Cork 2010 - They played a Down team that won nothing before or since and had been in the top 3 teams for 4 years and the final the year before.

Now actual outsiders are hard to find.
2011 - Dublin - up against a great Kerry team and were known as chokers
2003 - Tyrone - defeated the defending champions to win their first all Ireland
2002 - Armagh
1997 - Kerry - One man team beat the finalists from the previous year
1992 - Donegal - Were crap in semi and beat a much fancied Dublin team
1991 - Down - Came from nowhere to win and start an Ulster resurgence
1982 - Offaly - Darby saves the day

2011 was hardly a shock with the retirements over the previous winters. Jack O'Connor had taken on a 3 year deal very much aware of the rebuilding work required. Fitz in fairness has carried on the same and said as much when he came in.

The last shock winners were Donegal in 92. None of the others mentioned were shocks

Kerry were lower odds than Donegal at the start of this years championship
I think they were about 6/1 - Donegal were 25/1 at one stage

Kerry/Cork would of been shorter odds at start of season and they were guaranteed a place in last 8/12 with the seeded Munster Final. The Munster final are practically guaranteed a last 4 place if they get a favourable draw in Quarter Final

Meath winning Sam in 1996 would be shock. Not many people would have tipped them to go all the way.

The biggest shocks for me were Donegal in 1992 and Galway 1998.

Donegal's odds were longer this year due to being on the same side of the draw as the capital. It's why they were last in the betting of semi-finalists but once they got through, it's the reason their odds were then all of a sudden shorter. It's been said all year, the team that beats the capital will win the All-Ireland. It'll be a bit ironic if a Kerry side in transition over come a difficult Donegal side and become the biggest shock since Donegal won themselves in '92.
