Mayo lack a marquee forward?

In my opinion, if Mayo had 2 or 3 more decent forwards ye would have won the last two AI's. It's not a jab at ye, it's just what I see, it's not that ye don't score, it's just that ye don't score at vital times when you should be putting games to bed.

Of course we lack a marquee forward. Cillian is only 16 points ahead of the next player still involved in championship. Sure he's muck. Only the two hat tricks last year, one of them against arguably the finest defensive system and players ever assembled. Young poty twice.

In fairness realdub, if Dublin had some better forwards they might have won by more than 1 point. If anyone has better players, then they would do better. I don't really see the point there.

Also, it is worth remembering that mayo's forward line in the final last year was decimated with injuries. O'Connor, Dillon, Moran, Freeman and conroy were either injured or returning from injury, plus mcloughlin was out of form all year.

If the forwards were injured why did they play?Mayo forwards are well drilled and very much underrated.Varley,Freeman,Conroy,Sweeney and Gallagher are top forwards who would make any team

Check out the stats on Dontfoul and you will find Mayos forwards average the same accuracy as Dublin. Dublins highest scorer before last years final was Cluxton.

Giving away soft goals in the final is what cost Mayo not the forwards.

Nah master, if we had 15 fit players for the last 15 mins of that match we'd have won by more, you're last two points were scored after 72 mins, from frees, the climax to that game was inevitable IMO.

But I suppose the thread is about lack of top quality forwards, and I think you're a couple short. But having said all that, when the whole team took responsibility yesterday, when the chips were down, ye looked really good, but do ye need to be in that position to let rip? I think ye have a great chance this year, even more so than last.

We have guys who step in and score when we need to. 2nd goal was soft? You were ripped apart for that one. Outside Moran's goal, which was a defensive error, what did ye score from play in that 2nd half, and remember, this was an AI final.

Believe me, if ye win it this year, it'll because your forwards stood up when really needed.

Here is the bottom line, Most of the forwards there would NOT get in the starting 15 of Dublin, Actually...none of them would in my opinion, So that rules out the "any team" rubbish.

and before im accused of bias, most of those forwards wouldnt get on the Kerry team either..

Lets be brutally honest, Mayo have decent forwards, However, The only outstanding one is Cillian O'Connor in my opinion.

i agree

i rate kev mcloughlin - he would add to any team. .but not as a marquee forward.

O'Connor doesn't get near enough credit. he is a top top player. i think the fact that he takes frees actually leads people to ignore his other qualities. his performance against Roscommon this year was class.

Anyone who is having a punt on Mayo to win AI @7/1 would be far better served backing COC @ 11/1 to win POTY. 3 MOTM awards from Sunday Game already. If Mayo win AI it will be down to his scores and play in general and this would inevitably win him the POTY award..

Yeah it's a good bet, but if you're going for O'Connor at 11/1 you may as well double it with Mayo at 11/2, I don't think you'll get one without the other to be honest. I quite fancy a punt on Mayo myself!

This thread is about Mayo, marquee forwards and to my mind Cillian O Connor in particular. Your comment was completely irrelevant seeing as it was about Dublin vs Donegal. If you have something to offer in relation to the ongoing discussion please feel free to interject. Otherwise head off to a thread that bears some relation to what you wish to discuss.

Mayo are are in my view single handedly responsible for the rise in popularity of the GAA's latest cliché- marquee forward. Shame on them.

Cillian O Connor is top class in my opinion. He and the O Shea brothers are now the leaders of this Mayo team- a big shift from the Moran, Dillon, Clarke triumvirate that marked the early part of the Horan era.
