Jim McG compares Dublin to Chelsea

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I see Jim in the Indo today taking a veiled swipe at the Dubs, saying we are like Chelsea and how we have so much more resources etc than anyone else.......

Ironic really, given that he works in the SPL for Celtic isnt it.............

ohh god the minds games have started in donegal

Mind you im sure donegal will cling to anything to give them an edge in the semi final cause god knows they need everything

Reality is their forwards arent performing other that Michael murphy who has dragged them kicking and screaming into the semis

I fancy dublin to rail road them . Donegal can put thirty men behind the ball they still wont live with dublins power and pace
and most importanly they wont live with dublins bench

im going for dublin by 6 points plus Jimmy to sail off into the sunset as a good manager who brought sucess to donegal

Disrespectful mind games. Expected better from him.

Is that the sum total of your riposte then Liam, he can't compare them cos he's employed by Glasgow Celtic? Is he wrong in making such a comparison, are there similarities and is he right to highlight the growing gap between the haves and the have nots of county GAA? These are the pertinent questions and JMcG as a county manager with relatively meagre county resources when compared to some, has every right to raise the issue now before the situation becomes untenable and we end up with a championship so predictable and one sided that the public will eventually turn their back on it to the detriment of the game as a whole.

I don't think that's what that is. He was probably asked a question about Dublin's facilities and resources and that was his answer.
If anyone knows Jim or has even followed the Donegal story they would know that Jim has tried his best to help players where possible, even sometimes involving third party sponsors.

He came out after the all Ireland and publicised that some of his players didn't have work and without work they would have to go elsewhere.

Donegal are probably just behind Dublin, Cork and Mayo on the money scale so I definitely don't think this is a swipe at Dublin. Jim as always tell it like it is.

Jimmy is entitled to his opinion; and as someone who works
with a professional soccer team, he is in a much better
position to comment on the 'professionalism' of the Dubs
than you Liam! So dry yer eyes; there's a good lad! ;)

Jim will need to try every trick in the book to help his team out for the semi maybe the pressures getting to him and he feels the need for mind games! But to be fair to him id like to know under what context he made these comments!

It is disrespectful in the extreme - by comparing Dublin to Chelsea we have to assume he is talking about finances. Abramovich is known for buying the premierleague by funding large transfers and paying huge wages.
The Dublin players are amateurs - they have full-time jobs, or in college, only 2 part-time workers i know of (teachers).

The disrespect from Jim McG undermines all the work they put in. Do they not have to get up at 6am to go training every day? Make huge sacrificies, in their personal life, social life, diet, etc.?

Really bad form. Its 15 v 15. Id be embarrassed by this if I was from the fine county of Donegal.

Don't know if its mind games. It's basically saying Donegal have no right to beat Dublin. I guess he could be thinking it will motivate his players but it could have the opposite effect.
To be honest I'd say its more likely its just an inequity he feels strongly about.

Dublin have a lot of advantages

1. Large population (although the percentage of sport participants playing GAA is probably lower than nearly every other county with the possible exception of Limerick and Louth).
2. Majority of players remain in the county
3. Relatively small county which makes it easier to hold collective sessions (I know traffic can be a major issue)
4. Large support base and financial resources

However, these advantages have been there for a long time and yet with the exception of the early years of the GAA, Dublin havent dominated over an extended period of time on the national stage to the detriment of everyone else. In fact Kerry have had much longer periods of domination in the last 50 years.

I believe that at this moment in time Dublin are the best team in Ireland and really hammer home their advantage against the mid teir opposition. While the teams just behind Dublin may lose the majority of the time against them and may on occassion do so by a decent margin they are good enough to win against them at least some of the time especially if Dublin dont click or if Cluxton was injured.

IF they are beaten in the semi or final the media will take up some other case e.g. Donegal are unstoppable again. To me Dublin would still be the best team in the country but had failed to win one knock out game.

If you actually read the article properly, he is 100% respectful and accurate in his summing up. It is a perfect analysis of where things are at, he even admits trying to mimic the set up in Dublin.

I dont get the knee jerk defensiveness, it would be a different story if he were to come out and say that it is wrong, or that it is unfair. He doesnt, in fact he says that it improves the standards of other counties in order to try and compete with Dublin.

I was wondering how long it would take for this to get twisted. It's not a swipe. It's not veiled.

He made the comments in an envious way, not begrudgingly. And instead of saying 'Dublin should be split in two' he said it's up to the rest of us to catch up.

So read the article.

"maybe the pressures getting to him"
What pressure. Everyone says Dublin are going to Hammer us. No pressure on Donegal at all.

Also can people stop claiming that Jim moving on has anything to do with how Donegal do this year. Even if (when) we win sam he will be gone and who can blame him. He is thought of in high regard in a top club. forget about putting down soccer I think any one of us would jump at the chance to work at any sport for a living.

"Nutrition, conditioning, the amount of coaches they have - it's a professional set up in every aspect. And they're getting the benefit of that now.

"I'm not going to sit up here and criticise that. Because what we've tried to do over the last four years is raise our levels. And that has been difficult sometimes. And it has been easier other times.

It's funny how sensitive some folk are, and how willing they are to read what they want to and draw conclusions which suit their agenda. JMG has said more or less he is envious of Dublins setup and it is something Donegal have tried to do with varying degrees of success, Cue the pitch forks, accusations of Northern bias and all the other dull arguments doing the rounds because he answered a question about their opponents in the AI semis.

Every manager in the country would say the same thing but apparently its mind games.
