Footballers comfortable off either foot

(Oldest Posts First)

After seeing two great examples with Shane Walsh and Declan O'Sullivan in opposition Sunday, how many genuinely 2-footed footballers are there in the game at the moment? Even in professional soccer it is a very rare thing, so in my view it is an excellent tribute to underage coaching that such talents can be produced in our game. Walsh seems particularly unusual as he seems to strike frees from 40 yards out off either foot, it just depends what side of the goal he is. Diarmuid Connolly is another modern player who is equally strong off either side. Going back through the years, and from the late 90's you had Maurice Fitz and Ja Fallon. I know there are many players who are very good off both feet, but I am wondering who are the players who are equally gifted off both feet, or those from back through the years.

For all the speak of money and being atheletic ,No one mentions in analysing the current Dublin team that most of Dublins forward line can kick of either foot.

Stephen O'Neill's good with both feet. It seems like a serious asset to have, you'd think more players would work on their weaker foot.

i think the only 2 men I've seen regularly kicking frees from both sides with alternating feet were/are Matty Forde and Colm Cooper.

I am certainly open to correction on that tho - did James O'Donohoe or Colm O'Neill do it at the weekend?? Thought i noticed someone do it.

Cavanman ya Shane Walsh done it at the weekend, and Maurice Fitz used to do it a lot as well. Of course Peter Canavans 'weak' left foot was better than and scored more than most players right foot, but if I remember correctly he definitely favoured kicking off his right. Same with a number of other players mentioned. Most top intercounty forwards these days can generally kick reasonably well off both feet.

Kevin Cassidy - Right footed with a phantom left foot!!! I actually think he's more comfortable off his weaker foot.. If that makes any sense to anyone!!

McManus often does that with the club but obviously Finlay takes the ones from the right side for the county.

Colm McFadden

McFadden used his right foot once in an U-12 game and decided that it wasn't really his thing. He seems to have managed OK without one anyway!!

Some

Yup, knew someone did it.

Never saw Canavan take frees with the left, did he? Could certainly kick sublimely of both tho.

For all the fuss about Ciaran McDonald using the outside of his left so majestically, it is a real pity the ability to so easily switch feet is not recognised as equally, or more, impressive. (not a slight on McDonald btw - he was class)

Paul Finlay will solo the ball depending on which side the defender is coming from. Scored his best point for Monaghan with his right boot against Longford in the league in '05. Most talented player I've ever seen.

Most of the Donegal forwards can kick off both feet with McBrearty being an obvious exception.
