The Sky coverage hits home

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

On Sat 9th of August Donegal and Dublin quarter finals will not be available to the irish public on are national platform. Up to now i was neutral on this decision untill today. My father who is now 70 and has had numerious roles within my local club from managing to board level does not feel fit to travel to dublin and the bustle of walking to ground and the other situations that are understandable when you het to that age..so he informed me he would watch it at home. He read in todays paper that it is only available on sky sports which he does not have. He is now wondering how and where he will be fit to watch the game...Its a sad reflection on are elderly who built the association into what it is!

I always thought that Sky were only getting exclusive rights to one Quarter-Final?

They're welcome to them. Dublin will probably hammer whoever they're against and watching Donegal playing isn't exactly premium entertainment either.

(1) While I understand his plight, we live in a digital society,
a local bar or a neighbour surely has a sky box!
(2) I'd be more concerned about the 'fair weather' supporters who
manage to get tickets for the big games, while never being to a
league match. I know plenty who have given a lot of time and effort
to the GAA only to miss out on the big occasions because of the
bandwagon.
(3) SKY is a good thing for our sport because the monopoly that RTE
had is being challenged! It is obvious they are now improving their
act, using more statistical analysis on the Sunday game last week
for instance...

Could he not go watch in a neighbours, friends, local pub? Does he have a computer as games are streamed online?

Yes on 1.
Ah the ridiculous attack/go at fair weather supporters. Who cares if someone didn't attend any of the league games most don't in most counties even so called die hard supporters. Bandwagon supporters are just supporters like anyone else.
There is dozens in my own GAA club who play senior hurling and go to all the club games yet never or rarely go to county league games.

Solutions- Subscribe to SKY Sports, would be a nice gift to your Dad,visit a friend, neighbour or relative that has SKY.All men of that vintage are well accustomed to listening to the superb radio coverage we have today so it wouldnt be a bad substitute, and catch the highlights later on the Sunday Game.I work as a taxi driver in Dublin so have to catch a lot of games on the radio(i have Sky Sports also)as i work a lot of weekends.I always record every game to watch when i get home.Unfortunately this problem is not going to go away.SKY are here to stay. Its up to each of us to do whats best, but moaning about it certainly wont achieve anything.

Extraman, I can see where you are coming from but a neighbour or friend or local pub/club will have Sky. Watching a big game with your neighbours is next best thing to being at it.

Tenner for a day pass for Sky Sports on NOWTV. Pay it and set it up for him.

The GAA like to think we have a monopoly on this type of volunteerism but there is plenty of people who have dedicated years of their free time getting young people playing soccer and rugby and don't see Irish games on domestic TV either.

All your suggestions are valid and agree with some of them but we do not live in a perfect world where broadband is widely available in some parts of the country, people can afford sky sports subscriptions people can sit in pubs for two hours. Im not saying sky dont deserve the games or possible do a good job but is it not a valid point that the people who put so much into the gaa over their lifetime have a right to see the national game when they already pay a hefty TV licence. This is not an attack on sky sports but more of a slight reminder to the GAA of their amature status on a Premium pay per view sport channel

Think the lads are being a little harsh in their tone there but at same time it's not like it's going to happen every week.

Yer game will be at 2 as it's on with the Dubs. Bring him to a pub with a nice Sunday carvery, grab a meal together and watch the game. I'm sure there'll be plenty of other families around doing the same.

People of a certain age grew up listening to games on the wireless if they were not able to make them. It's tough on them but they have the option to get reacquainted with the radio commentary option they'll have used for the majority of their time following the sport.

It might be more entertaining than watching Mayo steamroll Cork next Saturday, nothing a player revolt in cork will sort out though after the game to get the manager ousted....... Again
