Ban on short kickout

(Oldest Posts First)

Not that I have any interest in the international rules series, I did however find it interesting that the long kick out is now mandatory. Keepers must clear the 45 on restarting play.

Would it not be a bad idea to introduce this to proper football? The art of high fielding would have to make a comeback surely if it did. I doubt this post would be popular with Dublin or Donegal fans as the short kick out is the cornerstone of their game.

Let's ban midfielders scoring and halfbacks breaking forward too.

Silly talk, I couldn't care less if Aidin O'Shea never catches another high ball in the middle of the pitch!

if we banned the short kickout all the forwards would just flood the middle and sense no high fielding.

Maybe if you introduced the "mark" between the two 45s it would lead to more regular, long kick outs.

does Cluxton take short kick outs? I think his great talent is long accurate kickouts not short easy ones.

In any case its a completely daft suggestion. Sure all it means is the centre will be completely crowded because there is no point being within the 45 because you are basically the invisible man in terms of receiving the ball if you are in this zone.

I have always liked the idea of a 'mark'.If you field a ball directly from a kick-out,you should be able to take a 'mark'.Encourages high-fielding.

Short kick outs are risky. It is actually a skill. If a team are on to you and your short kick outs, they can poach the ball off your corner back.
The real skill is when your keeper is able to mix it up, and players are alert to kick outs.

most of cluxtons kickouts clear the 45 anyway i wouldnt call them short kickouts
he just picks out runners most of the time and puts it into their chest
is that not a skill from a goalkeepers point of view?
most goalkeepers hate the old style punt and hope for the best.
i have always rathered the option of playing people with an engine in midfield
over 6ft 6in beampoles who have little or no football like we used to see all the time

Anything that limits tactical options is a bad thing in my opinion. Also surely banning short kickouts would make the middle of the field more making a clean catch even more difficult?

Why? Its a tactic, an option, a harmless, passive part of the game.
