Meath and Dublin, a dead rivalry

(Oldest Posts First)

Well lads,

After that today I think the myth that Meath always put it up to the Dubs and raise there game for them is well and truly blown out of the water. There's nothing special about Meath v Dublin any more and you'd no longer get excited about it.

So which are the biggest rivalries now? Is it the Dubs v Kerry?

tyrone kerry really the best modern 1...kerry cork..tyrone armagh....cork kerry...tyrone dublin has also produced some excellent games..mayo dublin potentially and obviously kerry dublin...i hate the nonsense about tradition..no basis for meath doing anything against dublin today...pathetic analysis by rte with one stating that meath are as well-equipped as anybody to cause dublin problems this season..who actually believes that?

Spot on Fabio,

The tradition of Meath and Dublin games being good is from about 20 years ago.

To be fair though, RTE have to try to sell it.

Can't argue with that, said last night I couldn't get excited about this fixture, felt like just another Leinster championship match as if we were playing Laois or Wexford, nothing special, I enjoyed it while it was there, but it's gone now.

Not in this era due to Dublin's utter dominance in contrast to Meath's long standing transitional period. You could say the same about Mayo/Galway as well but Meath/Dublin rivalry is dead in the water. You really know it now with how much pity they have for us after today. The gloating and the digs aren't near as filthy as they used to be!

Its sad now but we'll be back, it only takes one upset and a filthy game of football to ruffle the Jackeen's feathers again. And then it all kick-starts again;)

Most rivalries today are just media hype and we all get carried away now and again. Back door cooled a lot of them

Dublin are the first professional team in Gaelic football. What we saw yesterday was a professional team against an amateur team. It was like watching the international rules series when the Australians take it seriously.

The Dubs can call it begrudgery all they want but the facts are as follows:
Dublin have full time professional coaches all over the county, numbers dwarfing any other county. They have millions in sponsorship, 6m over 5 years, allowing them to have facilities and resources that only wealthy professional outfits can have. They have a pick of almost 2 million people (i know all dont play GAA but then all in Kildare, Leitrim or Derry dont all play GAA either). They play all their games at Croke Park, a stadium totally unique in Ireland in terms of its size, wind and noise dynamics, using the same dressing rooms on each occassion.

Its time for the GAA to get real. Are they interested in having a fair competition or are they interested in making money? (money which seems to go to build even more facilities in Dublin it seems but thats another days work)

Unfortunately the Rivalry theme is used to stoke interest from media which is understandable,, although after last year I did expect more from Meath. Game yesterday and Connaught final were more like a cup game where the lower division team drew the div1 team and people hoped the underdog might cause a shock. But in GAA that rarely happens.
