Possible to play championship in 2 counties?

(Oldest Posts First)

Hello to everyone on the forum.

Just a quick question, Im from Offaly (obviously) and I recently moved to another leinster county permanently due to work (and love :O). Anyway, I was living here the last year but now I have been promoted in my job and its literally impossible to get back to play any matches, nevermind train. I only played 2 league games and 1 championship game so far this year. What I am asking is it possible to transfer to a club in the area I am living?? Its not as if im glory hunting as Im going from an intermediate team to a Junior team. My current club have no objections as they understand my situation but hopefully I dont have to go a summer without any football

would imagine the rules will disallow you from playing for your new club but the GAA being the GAA, it would be a good idea to approach the county board (of your current county). They will make the final decision and it will most likely bear no heed to any written rule.

theman transfers to a club in a different county are allowed at any time of the year so you should approach the club you want to join and they will be able to get the paperwork going. If not contact the county secretary for a transfer form. Contrary to cavanman's helpful post the Gaa usually follows the written rules on this and if you are living and/or working in the new club area it should be no problem.

Thanks for that fattimy. I knew that county tranfers go through all year but the thing is i played 20mins of the first round of championship for my home club in April. Would this rule me out?

You can still transfer but you may not be able to play championship. You will be eligible to play league games or other competitions below county championship level.

You need to fill out this form, get it signed by your home club secretary & submitted to your home county secretary who should then process it via Croke Park. This can be done at any time but I'm not sure about eligibility for the current season if you've already played championship at home.

Unlike transfer between clubs in your own or any county you can transfer intercounty at any time of the season though as has been said above you wont be able to play championship if you have already done so. Speak to the secretary of the club that you are transferring to and he/she will organise all the paperwork. Your own club secretary will need to sign it as will the county secretaries before it goes to Croke Park.

Cant you play in 2 county championships if you are in college in one county and your own club is in another? Was there not a situation a couple of years back where 2 lads could have played for both teams in the Munster final? You could also play under an assumed name in the New York championship!

you can have an inter county transfer any time throughout the year. you can play league football in both counties, but you can only championship in one. you also need to be carefull regarding football and hurling, if a duel player was to play hurling champioship in one county this would leave him unable to play football championship in another. (ie seanie johnston playing hurling in kildare)as for the comment about playing under false names in new york, this might have been the case 10 years ago. but now with social media its impossible.

Ye I think i can transfer now but cant play championship till next year which effectively ends my football till next year as their league is over. May take up the foreign sport in the meantime.....

But players regularly play a championship game in ireland before playing in New york for the summer dont they? Is New York an exception or am I mistaken?

I find it hard to believe that a league could be completed in early June....

I think this is a tranfer sanction. each club in new york are allow four per season. this allow senior club in new york to bring in four big names usually county player whos county are out of the championship in late june. they can play championship in newyork and from the date of the sanction being signed in croke park they can't play championship at home for 40 days. this was brough in to stop the trend in the 80's and 90's of guys going to newyork and boston for a weekend to play. get a few dollars and flight home the next day.
