County Supporters

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Over the years I've noticed a lot of the same heads going to games especially during championship. Wondering where the bulk of support comes from within your county? From my own id say Newbridge, Athy, Carbury/Allenwood and Castledermot is where a lot of the hardcore descend from?

Dublin has changed a lot!!!

Before the bulk would have been north-side but now its all over the county to be honest.

Us Southsiders brought some sophistication to the whole set-up :), and no matter what SNUF tells us Lucan is not Southside.....its more no-mans land that no-one wants!!

Since the population is more fluid in Dublin its normal it is county wide, but there are still enough pockets were we still have our work cut out.

Have to say Eunans that I go to all the Mc Kenna Cup and league games as well as championship and you do see the same faces. I do take your point that you mightn't notice them at championship games due to the crowd but you can assume they'd be at them too. Donegal support would historically be mostly countywide excluding Inishowen but this has changed in recent years and there would now be support from all parts of the county.

ah even In championship you notice the McKenna cup and League supporters. Obviously the season ticket holders are generally in the same area anyway but I notice that the fair weather supporters wouldn't go in to watch the minor matches beforehand and such.

What I always found funny is the underage games. again its the same people that go to every game. I haven't got to much underage games in recent years but I remember it well before I started working.

Lucan is a very middle class area, where its safe, the GAA is King and the locals walk around with degree parchments hanging out their back pockets like it was a hankie!......thats why so many culchies choose to buy a house in Lucan over anywhere else!

As for supporting the county team. There seems to be a thing here that you 'have to be at every game' to be a real supporter!! Not like that in Lucan at all! Pepole talk football and hurling with authority in Lucan all the time dont feel the need to go to the games all the time!
Away league games are seen as an occasion to 'get on the road' now and again and enjoy a day out rather than an attempt to show how big a supporter you are! Going to "all the matches" impresses nobody!
Furthermore, folks also have other commitments aside from the GAA. When asking someone if they are going to a match they could just as easily say to you "No, I'll catch it on the Tele!". Those same people are as knowledgeable as you can get and are great club members!
'Having to go to every game' seems to be a working class thing, is what I feel!

In Louth most of the fans would probably come from the Northern end of the county.

Majority of our hurling supporters come from South Galway (obvious enough) but football, for the little we get, are made up of north and west Galway.

From Inishowen and there has always been large support from everyone up here.

Most of the hurling support would be Enniscorthy/Wexford district, football would be largely New Ross with a few from Gorey.

But there are always exceptions!

Joe Brolly called Antrim a sleeping giant and he is correct. When our footballers and hurlers do threaten with a bit of form the fanbase grows very rapidly from the loyal core to potentially 1000's. When we played Tyrone in the 2009 Ulster final Antrim outnumbered Tyrone fans 3 to 1 in Clones and the potential is massive if the right investment was put in. Our football support would be mainly Belfast and South Antrim while the hurlers attract big support from North Antrim, the Glens and Belfast. However given the fact that our teams were playing at the same time in Enniskillen and Laois tells you that Croke Park and the Ulster Council don't give a toss about the potential Antrim support and the finance it could bring in. Dublin and Cork senior hurlers and footballers would never be allowed to play at different venues at the same time and that's the difference. Belfast is the second biggest city in Ireland and we have the second or third largest number of clubs but have been ignored for decades by those in charge and it's no wonder that this negligence has allowed soccer to become the Number 1 sport in Catholic areas of Belfast.

OLLIE,

Yes it is!
Or more correctly 'Kildare and Meath are on the border of Lucan'!

In fairness to them, its a long oul trek up to Dublin from Lucan.
Youd need to be setting off at the crack of dawn, and herself would have been up half the night making hang sangiches and mixing mi wadi in old Cadet orangeade bottles.

Youd have to find somewhere en route to stop in for the blast of Mass as well, otherwise god knows what would happen.

Best to stay home alright.

They need to stay at home to keep an eye on the house Horse. Dodgy area out there sandwiched between Blanch and Clondalkin.

Who are ya tellin lad!
There was a joke doing the rounds many years back that you couldn't call yourself a real Lucan person unless you had your car stolen or house broken into by someone from Clondalkin, such was the regularity of them creeping into Lucan at night to get up to no good!!
Blanch, not so much cos it was either take the strawberry beds route or pay the toll!!!
Thankfully its a lot less these days!
