Mayo - Where to from here?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Many people have tipped them to win Sam, and they are many people's second favourites. But after today's defeat against Derry, they looked very ordinary. I know it's only the league, but winning breeds confidence at any level, and given their failure in Croke Park in the last 2 AI finals, you would imagine the league title would have been a boost for them. But they were flat, they looked leaky at the back, and played the game with an extra man for 50 minutes but couldn't make it count.

We all know they will sail through Connacht, but is that as good as it will get for them?

Thoughts?

They are overrated and lack bottle. Will they win an All Ireland with the current manager? I think not even though i would like to see them win one.

Thy are very good footballers but I said after their losses to Donegal and Dublin that they don't have the mental strength, cynicism or street wise tactics to win major tournaments. They should have gone after Derry and took the game by the scruff after Doherty's ending off but it was obvious Derry's physicality and tackling was knocking the heart out of them; Mayo just didn't want to know and that is worrying for their management and fans.

That's twice in the last 3 games they've let a lead slip against 14 men. Last year was their year & they lost it on the line in the final.

Hard to know really.

I said at the start of this season that Mayo would not win the All Ireland, as they have had 3 long seasons in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and no All Ireland title. To push for a 4th season would be extremely difficult, especially with the emergence of fresher hungrier sides like Cork and Derry to the mix.

A team needs to go back to the drawing board every 2 or 3 seasons, to restructure and tweak how they play. Mayo haven't made substancial changes since 2012.

Anyone who tips Mayo for Sam really has no clue about Gaelic Football. Those lads are serial losers.I'm convinced that if they were 4 points up with a minute left in an All Ireland final they would find some way to mess up.I wouldn't be surprised if Galway beat them in Connacht.

It's only the flipping league. Who really gives an honest feck? Having said that, I expect a good championship from Derry.

This is not a good result fotr Mayo & you would have to wonder how many times this group can go to the well & come up short.

I admire James Horan but something is missing & a change at the top is needed.

I think they geniunely are doing their best, and have tried everything to win sam and a league in recent years. They have tried to be cute as well as play football. Nothing works. The curse lives.

If anyone is to stop Mayo in Connacht it'll be Roscommon. And you accuse others of not having a clue!?

Lacked bottle big time today. Game was there for the taking and they couldn't do it. Very good performance from Derry after losing Doherty mid way through the first half. Class display from Mark Lynch yet again, under rated player. If they get Eoin Bradley back for the championship and Ryan Bell back in the side, they could win Ulster.

What a very immature thread, Mayo lost a league game here today. End of story, who remembers league winners anyway? Mayo are a very strong side, and will be knocking on the door again come September. It will more likely be Mayo than Derry who will go further in the championship. Its Derry's first year back in League one, they are taking it very very seriously.

Mayo will be there or there abouts on September. Never write a team off just cos of the league. Dublin, Cork, Mayo and then one of Tyrone/Derry/Donegal (yes, remember them?). After that it's a bit of luck here and there and refs making up their own rules about black cards and I think there is a cracking champo ahead.

Not great today by Mayo in all fairness.
Playing v 14 men for most of the game and were still beaten by a better team.

Gonna take a hell of a lot to get this Mayo team back into an All Ireland Final in my opinion.
