End this naming teams days before game nonsense!!!

(Oldest Posts First)

Had a look at the Dublin team named to start on Sunday and i came to the following conclusion.

I personally believe its time to end this nonsense of naming a team days before the event. I know the programmes have to be printed and all that kinda craic, But if teams named arent going to line out then whats the point ? Its ridiculous that a manager should have to name a side before final checks etc are made on certain players that may be carrying knocks and so on anyway.

i'd be inclined to favour a move to "squad numbers" and have the squad from 1-26 or whatever listed in the programme and have the managers just release their team an hour before throw in.

In a way, Nothing will change. The managers will still be able to play their "mind games" by keeping their opposition guessing as to who will play and who wont play, The fans will still be able to discuss the team that will possibly start up until an hour before the game in pubs around the grounds and in the stadium

The only difference would be the programme itself - instead of naming 15 players and subs and making a few changes before throw in, At the start of the league - Name your panel, Including injured players or players playing on club duty, Give them a number and they stick with that number through-out the league. When the squad gets cut then for the championship, Hand an official squad number list to the GAA , Then just let the manager pick his his 15 on matchday an hour or so before hand.

Or you could name your 15 on Thursday and any changes before throw in are considered a substitution

What if 3 players get injured in light training between Thur and Sun? I think it would be best to name a squad and then the starting 15 before throw-in. I like the naming of a team midweek. It encourages debate in the media and on forums like this. The GAA world would be a much duller place without it.

I think counting late changes as subs would be a bit of a drastic change. The setup at present doesn't bother me tbh.

There was talk from O'Neill last year of taking steps to deter managers from naming smokescreen teams.

Agree with thread and think named squad (as is) is probably more appropriate. As anyone who has managed any team at any level will know, often you are sweating on players availability and often team isn't decided (honestly) until they have to get the jerseys on. Its not really fair to punish players with yellow cards when they have absolutely no say or control on the team!! Wouldn't be fair to punish the entire team either..

Or you could just go to the game like I do and not give a damn what team is put out because you have no control over it and it doesnt matter what your thoughts on the team selection are anyway because its just your opinion and nobody cares just like I dont care what anyone elses thoughts on team selections are!.....Just leave the manager to do his job!

Put the name of the player on the back of the jersey as well. Keenan number 8 does the job for me.
