Just what RTE deserve

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

RTE have been very arrogant in their attitude towards coverage of our games. They only cover the championship and pay absolutely no attention to the national leagues apart from a pathetic highlights show. They have never invested in showing the club championships. There was no fuss when setanta were showing the national league games on Saturday nights. I think this SKY move is a positive move. Dont here any of the players complaining in any of this.

Question should be why do Irish people have to pay a license fee to rte yearly? That is subscription too. It is called free to air but in reality is 160 a year.

Could a viewer ditch the two RTE channels and just have Sky? No, so RTE force people to pay for their channels. Sky is an option, and an option most people take.

The players are not complaining because it broadens the marketing and money making opportunities for them with advertising and sponsorship deals etc!!!

Are people really that blind as to how the real world works out there that they cant see the money drives everything no matter how small??!!
Jaysus wept!.....Open yer eyes people!!

I'll bet you wont see footballers from Fermanagh or Carlow or Clare et al saying its a great thing because they wont get a slice of the money making opportunities surrounding it!

WAKE UP....OPEN YER EYES as to how the world works!

+1

Ryle Nugent head of RTE Sport in Rugby man so his sport seems to get priority. From end of September to June the coverage of GAA is brutal.Fair dues to TG4 for great coverage of national league and club championship.

This was introduced on yesterday's TV news as for the first time some games will not be on Free to Air TV.

RTE is not Free to Air. In the south you pay for it through a TV licence. In the North you pay for it through Sky or similar.

I also don't see why the GAA would owe anything to RTE. Much of the analysis focused on the teams being poor, slow, defensive etc. I'd say SKY might have a bit more praise/promotion of what is on show.

The GAA hardly do enough to promote the league themselves anyway. Managers often talk it down. It's championship preparation at the end of the day. People make the games if they want to see them and most local radio stations will cover the games.

Can i join the sense talking club please? RTE are the biggest joke in Ireland and that says a lot. They have no national pride and would prefer if there was a rugby club in every parish instead of the gaa and soccer ones. I can't beleive they don't want to cover the national league. Even Div 1 and 2. Highlights package needs to be 2 hours long not the insult they give us that shows the games already shown on tg4 and setanta and gives us 1 pundit chatting under an umbrella in a random GAA ground.

And to say we get enough in the summer. That's 4 months of good coverage for the top level of our games. The least they can do is give coverage for an extra 2 months for the league. That's only 6 months and still less than the 8 months plus the soccer and rugby often gets.

tyroneed, you are right in what you say. It is constant bashing of players and managers on RTE.

maybe in kerry you don't value it because you've won sam so much but an awful lot of counties do and will do anything to get back into division 1. everybody knows that unless you improve your league standing and are in division 1 or pushing to get into it you have little to know chance in the championship. if you seen many of the games this year in both codes but especially hurling it's insulting to say the players don't take it seriously. as for attendance at matches it's a lot better than the LOI for example but RTE will show that live.

Second that Inthrough. RTE nearly ignore GAA for 6 months of the year. Might make them buck up their ideas.

Dead right. They were quick to paint the gaa as money-hungry etc in this little escapade, but that ignores the frankly second rate job they were doing in the first place.

I hope it works out and sky push for some league games themselves, which frankly arent being shown anyway... Let them have their rugby.

The parishes of Kilcar & Glencolumkille are known in Donegal as "inthrough" so it was a bit of a giveaway.

Coverage of the national games has completely languished and I welcome this deal if for no other reason but RTE getting a good kicking to wake them out of their complacency.

And as someone who lives overseas, I welcome any move that makes it possible for me to watch the games without having to find an Irish pub at 6 in the morning and then having to pay $20 a game.

@ Jack_Goff

I never said players don't take it seriously, I said the GAA don't do a good job of promoting it. That's been reflected in the coverage. Most local media give the games good coverage anyway. Tg4 deserve to be showing games too. I think people are getting too worked up on this one. If there was an eagerness to promote the league something as simple as using it for seeding teams in the championship or just the qualifiers even would be brought in to give the league an added edge.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoy league games.

Have to agree with legend, the league does mean nothing and it is all about championship. In Tipp they were saying that the league run they had last year ruined their championship preparation and that no way should they try to reach the league final this year. If Meath won Division 2 but didn't get to a Leinster final and lost early on in the qualifiers, would Meath people be happy with that? I doubt it.

In fairness to RTE they do show a lot of the championship and would show more only the GAA cut back on games offered. (In saying that I have no idea why they do show LOI alight, that is absolute muck to watch).

The GAA do have to take some blame for the lack of appeal of the league.

I saw some of the questing of O' neil. He was grilled! some of our ministers dont get grilled like thta over serious issues.

At one point the interviewer stated, so fans have to pay the sky fee or go to the pub to watch the game.

liam's reply....'or they could go to the game'

I remember when rte covered the AI semi's and finals. The railway cup was also shown live. That was it.

1 hour to cover all the league games that happened over the weekend is pathetic.

RTE look like a small backwater TV Station these days
