GAA cult hero

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

acting upon a suggestion from a fellow county man on another thread,i decided to set this thread up.

every county has a character, maybe not the most talented, but could win a game in a 5 minute cameo substitute appearance.somehow managed to get the vital goals, that sort of thing.for wexford, our man for this was billy byrne.also allowed in here are characters who might not have been the fittest but made the best use of very limited talent.others include posers who could pull it off (eg gerry mcInerney).others springing to mind in this category are ger 'sparrow' o loughlin, noel lane, willie murphy,PJ o'connell and seamus darby for me.

I'd stick Geoffrey McGonigle of Dungiven and Derry in that category - didn't look like an athelete but deadly finisher, in a Jimmy Keaveny kinda way.

From Down, Magic Johnston for our hurlers would be considered a cult hero in my book - 10 feet tall and scoring points from anywhere with men bouncing off him left, right and centre :)

Also, as a young teenager I remember Finbar McConnel in goal for Tyrone, biggest man I've ever seen with outrageous distance on his kickouts. He was loved by the fans.

The original cult hero from a Dublin perspective I suppose would be 'Jayo',

The modern equivalent would Kev Mc for his Kingdom killer goals :)

The big man from Longford, can't remember his name now, might have been Sheridan? I remember him coming on against Donegal in a qualifier one time and everyone taking the piss. Donegal had the game won but he caused havoc in the Donegal full back line when he went in.

Niall Sheridan is the lad you're thinking of lockjaw, first name I thought of when I saw this thread ! Absolute legend.

Niall Sheridan I think. There's a great photograph of him bursting through what looks like the entire Dublin defence.

Hmmm, interesting question, difficult to figure out who would have cult status, as opposed to legendary status (like your John Doyle's, Nicky English's etc). For Tipp, people like Donie O'Connell maybe (having a killer moustache always helps)? Or Joe Hayes?
In the 90's, the tantalizingly rubenesque Paul Shelly definitely held some sort of magnetism for the Tipp faithful, that may qualify for this type of categorization.

For Antrim folk, would Olcan McFetridge fall into this category? Or even the mighty Niall Patterson?

So many from the royal hard to just pick out one, Mattie McCabe from the 80s always good to come on and rattle the net, then you have Giles and gg but hardly subs but gods.. non the less, I presume Ollie Murphy from that time, big Joe of recent times.

For Cork hurlers, John "Schillachi" Fitzgibbon was never the most gifted hurler but came up with some crucial goals. For the footballers, John O'Driscoll was a lovely footballer but usually played a substitute role and usually did the business whenever he came on.

Ahh Billy Byrne...the memories!
Was it the 97 Leinster final where he came on 10 mins from the end and scored 1-2(the goal being the poxiest Ive ever seen)?Would also throw in Tony Doran(not only could he score a vital goal but he could cure your cattle of mastitis as well),Stoney Burke and Jimmy holohan from Wexford.
Outside my own county Geoffrey mc Gonnigle,Niall Patterson and Niall Sheridan spring to mind as well as Pat O Byrne up in Wicklow. Now Pat wasn't the most elegant player in history but many a player left Aughrim with a sore shoulder after running into him.
