Great GAA Songs

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Couldnt find the original "GAA songs" thread (maybe administrator will help me and add to original thread if he can find it, not in the first 20 pages) but someone mentioned "Cuchulainn's son" as a great GAA song but couldnt find it anywhere (think it was bennybunny or culchie or one of the Cork lads) . The song is written/sang generally by a late Wexford man named Martin Codd about Nicky Rackard. Having grown up on stories of the Rackards and Quigleys, it is a great song. Personally I think Martin Codd does a better version of it but a great version all the same (move video on 1 minute to ignore the first minute of talking!) and I couldnt find his original. Enjoy.

Great stuff Pinkie if you are in to that type of music. Martin Codd sang another song about the great Nicky concerning the Cork final. Any idea where I could get my hands on this or is there any links?

Cavan people love their football and their football heroes. How about this Ian Corrigan song on Charlie Gallagher, the best Cavan footballer of the past 50 years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciRMZ14hZog

A song for our many Tyrone readers here today. Great to see the McGuigan name still wearing the famous Red Hand with pride.

A couple of Dublin songs from over the years spring to mind. ''The likes of Heffo's army'' by a band called The Memories was released in 1974 as a tribute to that years all Ireland winning team. Another called ''14 on and 14 off'' was released in 1979 after that years Leinster final when Dublin produced a brilliant comeback to beat an emerging Offaly team with the last kick of the game after talismanic full forward Jimmy Keaveney had been sent off in the first half. Can't remeber who sang that one , nor can I find any links to either on youtube.

Cuchulainn's Son

The challenge of an ancient game
Brought glory, glory to your name
Though March winds blew the crowds still came
To watch you gentle hero
In life's long march you made us proud
And many a voice from out the crowd
Called out your name aloud, aloud
An echo still resounding

CHORUS
And Blackstairs men who saw you then
Still speak of you in awe
On Carman's green where you had been
They tell of what they saw
We watched you on September fields
And lightning was the drive
You were the one Cuchulainn's son in 1955

The hand that held the stick of ash
And the man who led with style and dash
Oh! Carrigtwohill once felt the crash
And Bennettsbridge and Thurles
And when in later life, you met
The devil on that lonely street
You showed us how to take defeat
With dignity and courage

CHORUS

The last parade was sad and slow
The last oration spoken low
And as, on green fields long ago
The Diamond stood beside you
Old friends they flanked you side by side
And the tears they shed were tears of pride
An ash tree toppled when you died
And scattered seeds at random

CHORUS

Pinkie:

Bein a Rathnure man myself I absolutely love this song and it is most definitely our club 'anthem'.

The link for the great Martin Codd's (RIP) version is as follows:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/sports-recreation/sport/wexford-hurling/wexford-hurling-in-the-19/cuchulainns-son/

Then at the end of where the lyrics are written simply click where it indicates that you can hear the song, hope this link is of benefit.

There is a song/poem that is one of my earliest memories of GAA. Its called "The Greatest of the Gael". With the thanks of a poster on here i managed to find it on a cd and got it for the auld fella for Christmas. If i ever get the time i will transcribe it and post it on here. I think it deserves to be written down and shared.

I think "Dancing at the Crossroads" deserves a mention here.

If you want to hear good GAA songs, head to Quinns !

'Snuffys Lament for Mayo Football'

Oh the green and red of mayo, weighs heavy on my heart,
Oh the green and red of mayo, should just give up from the start,
Tis the most distressful county that ever yet was seen,
They should ban all men and women that wear the red and green.

Oh the green and red of mayo, all born with two left feet,
Oh the green and red of mayo, their a handy team to beat,
Oh they put their faith in false Gods, bleached hair and fake tan,
In the Tommy Murphy next year, they'll do the best they can.

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael
