Any exclusions from the all star nominations anyone is surprised with I though a Galway player or two would get nominated. Tarismelting22 (Roscommon) - Posts: 760 - 21/09/2017 08:12:01 2048865 Link 1 |
I honestly don't think Clarke should have been nominated for Footballer of the Year. Great shot stopper, don't get me wrong but some of his kick outs haven't been great. I'm thinking back to the first game vs Kerry. Also, on Sunday when his team needed a decent restart from the Dean Rock winning point, he kicked it out over the line. If you're going to have a 2nd Mayo player in there I would be looking at someone like Aidan O'Shea. Cluxton should be the goalkeeper for the All Star team but doesn't mean he will be as it's based on the votes of the players. Andy Moran should win POTY though in my opinion, has been more consistent over a greater number of games. Top player. gingerdub (Dublin) - Posts: 11 - 21/09/2017 10:08:23 2048897 Link 0 |

Good to see the likes of Colm Kavanagh, Jamie Clarke and Flynn in the all star list. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 21/09/2017 10:28:45 2048909 Link 0 |
In fairness we don't deserve one, Michael Daly would probably have been the closest to a nomination but he probably just didn't do enough and he was nominated for young player of the year. We didn't have any other player who was consistently good enough in the games against Mayo, Roscommon, Donegal & Kerry.

Kildare only get the two Nominees! While Galway who beat Mayo and thrashed Donegal get none! If Kildare had of beat anyone decent they would have cleaned up. salvador (Roscommon) - Posts: 439 - 21/09/2017 11:43:06 2048947 Link 0 |
In what year should Connolly have got POTY?

Who from Galway deserved a nomination?

Kilkenny for POTY, You must be joking. He won't win an all star let alone be in the conversation for POTY. Best man-marking job i've ever seen by a player on him the last day. It's mad really that by the time Connolly is 31, he'll still only have 2 All-Stars to his name. IMO Lee Keegan and him are the most talented footballers of this generation but the red mist has prevented Connolly from winning the individual accolades his talent deserves. He was ultimately the match winner for Dublin the last day in the second half.

Perhaps could have won it in 2014, the year James O Donoghue won it, but ultimately it was the correct decision O Donoghue won it. Wasn't in the reckoning for POTY any other year.

I think with McCarty and Moran both being nominated and McCarty already getting the nod for MOTM in the final, he might squeeze it. But, as one of the posters above stated. Cluxton getting nominated might hurt McCarty. Marse (Dublin) - Posts: 217 - 21/09/2017 13:44:42 2049002 Link 0 |
Also can't believe Bastick didn't get the nomination. He never put a foot wrong all season. Disgrace, total injustice!!! Marse (Dublin) - Posts: 217 - 21/09/2017 13:46:12 2049003 Link 0 |
Ironic that mayo get 5 forward nominees yet the media constantly say their forwards are their weak point haha you couldn't make it up it's as bad as the Sunday game panel naming three different players who single handedly dragged mayo to the final, there bringing contradicting to new levels. hill16no1man (Dublin) - Posts: 12665 - 21/09/2017 13:51:27 2049004 Link 0 |
I think he would have been player of the year in 2015 and deservedly so only for the sending off in the semi final and the heat that created.

Your first point is wrong mate, Kilkenny for me has been Dublins best player this year, unfortunately that looks to be rumbled now as, as you say he was marked out of it on Sunday, yet he was clever enough to take his man marker centre field and Connolly exploited the space second half. Keegan marked him well to be fair. Kilkenny was the best player in the country for me this year, i couldn't argue with he nominations though, but as i say i would have Boyle and Higgins in over Clarke. Im not that surprised to be honest, he is a controversial character, not that he is practically dirty player, hes just a bit of a rouge, you would dislike him if your not from Dublin, the cheeky grin when he won the free on Sunday is a perfect example, but you would worship if from Dublin, he is an absolute maverick, to be honest i think you need characters in the game and he is certainly that, im sure his 5 celtic crosses help the balm the pain of missing out on a couple of all stars and he will probably be re remembered as the greatest player, on the greatest dublin team ever. i suppose like one or two others he doesn't fit the squeaky clean narrative the GAA likes to project on those days. Lee Keegan is a fine player surely - agreed. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 21/09/2017 15:28:59 2049054 Link 0 |
Was it not more the lack of fire power off the bench that there were question marks over Mayo? Their starting 6 forwards did score 10 points from play in the final to be fair to them and have been scoring quite heavily all championship.

Galway played four games against div one teams(albeit one a relegated one)two big wins. one against the second best team in Ireland in castlebar, they hammered Donegal and had two poor losses. Kildare beat a relegated div three team and a average div two team got well beaten by the dubs in first gear and got beaten by a team stuck in div three who were destroyed in their next game! On that basis Surely Armstrong, O'Donnell, Heaney or Daly merit recognition more than the two Kildare players.? Or maybe I'm missing something.. salvador (Roscommon) - Posts: 439 - 21/09/2017 16:15:22 2049068 Link 0 |
The two Kildare lads had better championship campaigns than any Galway players. O'Donnell would be miles of a nomination, Heaney played well against Mayo & Donegal but didn't do enough to warrant it either and the same goes for Armstrong who in fairness did well against Kerry but probably lacked having one particular great game. Daly in fairness had 4 good championship games and would have been the closest to a nomination but its hardly something to be disappointed with. I'm still extremely disappointed with our tame exit to Kerry. Kevin Walsh has a big year ahead of him and has to do better. TheWestIsAwake (UK) - Posts: 529 - 21/09/2017 18:45:59 2049120 Link 1 |
Its based on player performance not team and who they beat. Feeley was the best midfielder in the Dublin, Laois and Meath games. Cant deny him his nomination. Likewise Flynn had some fantastic scores in games played including one of the best pints scored in Croke park, against the all Ireland champions.

All irrelevant anyway,.Your disappointment with the end is clouding the logic that the two Kildare lads had a better championship. It Doesn't make any sense whatsoever! They didn't get even one result of note and couldn't beat a division three team when it came to the crunch. Feely is a proper player in fairness. I know your exit was poor but it was hardly worse than Kildare's where their two nominee's didn't do much and one was hauled ashore if I remember. We had a very similar championship and exit last year and certainly didn't get two all star nominee's. salvador (Roscommon) - Posts: 439 - 21/09/2017 20:22:23 2049151 Link 0 |
