By the championship rolls around next year the Dublin age profile will be quite high. royce (UK) - Posts: 30 - 20/09/2017 21:43:42 2048799 Link 0 |

To be fair to the lads they are still a fit punch for Amateur Athletics..premiership players and rugby players in the same age bracket as the Dublin lads are just not even close to been as fit as them, consider the fact also there is a lot more work and running involved in modern day football than their would be soccer or Rugby ! Rugby would be more attritional in the physicality stakes but still its a credit to Dublin and all involved !

I think its a good mix, less than half the squad over 30, and of them that are most are border line, I'm sure Gavin will be delving into that under 21 team to keep a good balance Barrowsider (Carlow) - Posts: 1592 - 21/09/2017 10:47:03 2048920 Link 0 |

There certainly is up and coming players but remember that in Tralee in the league the Old Heads pulled it out of the fire - the same last sunday so any supporters need to be weary in any county of too much expectation from underage success. Mayo introduced probably significantly younger subs on Sunday than those brought in by Dublin. Dublin won the old heads that had seen it before and were proven brought Dublin through the day them lads no longer have it in the legs .... well then we will find out if the younger players can truely carry the mantle

One of the surprising things really has been how successful the team was with most of the above not starting consistently. There are waves of ages in the team and seems to be a set pattern for introducing players. This year hasnt been great for injuries either. We have to look to the O Byrne Cup now and the league, we have another All Ireland U21 title team won this year bubbling under the surfice, have some really big hopes for a few in that team. Brian Howard will be a name to look out for in 2018. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 21/09/2017 15:33:27 2049056 Link 0 |
The age of Dublin players has not gone unnoticed by those that know and understand football , I have lost count the amount of times I commented on the perfect storm . In order for Dublin to achieve what we have achieved it required serious factors to come together , talent, funding , coaching , and mental steel with a serious group of volunteers in the background Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 21/09/2017 15:36:09 2049057 Link 0 |
Go across the board on any current inter county squad and you'll see similar age profiles: keithlemon (Australia) - Posts: 920 - 21/09/2017 16:03:37 2049066 Link 0 |
It's 1 minor win in over 30 years and very few final appearances as well which is an incredible statistic really. But Dublin have won 4 U-21s this decade. There could be a huge number of reasons for the difference in fortunes at these 2 levels, it would be very interesting if someone looked at it all. Dublin will always be one of the country's top teams but they won't always be this dominant as they won't always have a squad of players as good as they have now. I'm sure much of the country was getting nostalgic for the dodgy freetakers from the 00's when Rock put that last one over the bar Sunday.

I'd say at U21 level we'd have an edge in that the majority of our players are studying in Dublin. Much easier to get them together for training. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13707 - 21/09/2017 17:12:13 2049082 Link 0 |

I'd also have a suspicion that Havin left a bit of s footprint at under 21 a template so to speak , I know at minor and below to development squads it's each to their own all depends on the coach at the time , don't think Dessie gets enough credit with the work he's does IMO

Agreed and easier to for us to be better organised..no distraction of leaving cert etc like you have at minor and very long commutes other counties have

Are there additional u21 development squads to cater for the players straight out of minor?
