Appointment of All-Ireland SFC final referee

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I sincerely hope HS admin allow this topic be discussed as I believe it's a fair debate to have. Ahead of the the referee being named on Monday,
Do you believe a referee who lives and works in a participating county should be appointed as a the referee?
I honestly believe it's wrong and that it should be a referee from a non participating province.

Do you feel Kerry would benefit from having a Cork ref?

If a cork man lived and worked in Tralee do you think he'd be appointed to ref a Kerry game?
I doubt it, regardless this is not about Kerry it's a general question.
If you play club football would you accept a ref that was working and living in the clubs parish you were playing against?

I see Rochford has had a bit to say about who should be appointed. Far too much is made of who referees games as all referees do their best and all will make mistakes. Of all the decisions made last year the craziest, most costly and most unfathomable was the decision of Mayo management to swap their goalkeeper, and they had a couple of weeks to think about that rather than the split second a referee gets when making his big decisions.

I find it massively inappropriate and frankly creepy and dangerous that people go to lengths to find out where referees work and live.

If a ref from Galway worked in Mayo and gave a huge decision against them in an All Ireland final he'd be killed and recognised every time he went to a shop for his/her lunch and abused

If a ref from Meath worked in Dublin and made a big decision against Dublin in an All Ireland he wouldn't be even recognised going to or from work due to popularity of other sports and huge population in county that have no interest in GAA.

There's an assumption here that refs can be biased , maybe we shouldn't judge them by our lower standards , I honestly believe that refs try their best and are not influenced by geography , if you look close enough you will always find fault , a good ref is a good ref a poor one a poor one were they were born is immaterial, I just hope when named whoever it is can do the job

It doesn't matter whether he is from Meath or Wicklow you want the best referee doing the final.

Maddog, please read the question again,
It's not where he is from its that he is living in a participating county.
I note one has actually answered a direct question.

In one instance it was covered in a documentary after the 2015 final so you didn't have to go out if your way, I'd also imagine it will be in the match program so no need for the melodrama.

What about if he was married to someone from a county in the final or had friends in a county is the final , does that rule them out then?

I disagree mate, yes it will have what county they are from, but lads have gone as far as finding out where someone lives, where they work, what club they are in. You may think that is ok, but its a far bigger issue then referee selection. Some are worse then others of course.

I do agree with you completely, no right minded person would condone that.
My original question though stands and no one answered it.
Should a ref based in a participating county ref a big game that involves the county he lives in.

I don't see why not. You are implying some sort of bias am i right. Are refs not professionals? I believe Joe will get the final. Watch the internet explode!

I think county of origin is fine.

I don't believe any ref goes out to intentionally make calls for one team of course not but unconscious bias is always possible.
Reverse the scenario if the ref for the final was a Galway man living and working in Castlebar would that be acceptable to you?

The inference in your question is that a ref that lives or works in Dublin will want Dublin to win, simply because he works here. By the same logic should Rochford refuse to pick the likes of Seamus O Shea that works in Dublin, he will obviously want Dublin to win too following your line of thought.
At the end of the day any ref appointed will do his best, not the best he can for Dublin, or the best he can for Mayo, but simply try to turn in the performance of his career, the same as all 30 players that take the field will hope to do. In every game supporters can point to a decision that they should have got or will feel went again them, but as much as people hate to admit it, generally speaking decisions will balance themselves out during most games, and its very rare that a single decision will decide a game.
