A football keeper kicking the ball out for a 45 on his own kick out? jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 26/08/2017 19:31:52 2038181 Link 3 |
I was at that side of Hogan almost along the end line and it even looked worse from there. The crowd including the kerry fans were laughing - you wouldn't see it in an u8 match but to be fair to the lad the Kerry selector, who eventually got sent off, was always running over to him and putting him under pressure - this along with the Mayo high press the lad just folded.

Well at least he didn't concede possession to Mayo inside the 21 metre line. Maybe it was a tactic to concede on the 45?

Hassett ran out in front of a couple of Mayo attacks trying to distract them, deservedly sent off.

Another first, Ref Gough and his family of umpires today, only in the GAA would you see madness like this. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4896 - 26/08/2017 20:25:34 2038235 Link 3 |

the umpires should all be upto inter county ref level and be appointed by croke park along with the ref linesmen and 4th official. too much at stake at inter county level to just be related or a mate of the ref

Was thinking it must be a first myself, but I did feel sorry for Kelly, it was very embarrassing and he had a mare in general. One to forget. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8591 - 26/08/2017 21:17:20 2038280 Link 2 |
Just going back to the original question Does anyone remember this ever happening before?? Possible pub quiz question some day! Cbar (Mayo) - Posts: 308 - 26/08/2017 21:26:14 2038290 Link 0 |
I have seen it happen in club football when the goalie was kicking into a gale force wind. I cannot ever recall seeing it happen before at inter-county level.

The ref had his family as umpires, at least he could trust their judgement, pity the 2 linesmen were asleep for majority of the game riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 26/08/2017 22:24:51 2038333 Link 0 |
The problem with this is that they probably won't tell him when he's having a stinker; they won't tell him his decisions are wrong when they are as an independent one would, or at least should. What can be done about all the cynical fouling? 19 cards in a game and no one cares. Can't suspend anyone as there are more appeals than in the legal system. Football is dying. I once seen an U14 goalie put his own kick out (from the small parallelogram) over his own crossbar. He gave the ONeills the "full bull toe" into the teeth of a hurricane behind in bellmullet. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1109 - 27/08/2017 08:45:36 2038455 Link 0 |
It's not the first time this has happened it actually happened to our minor keeper in either the semifinal or allireland final last year as well, but in fairness to billy Courtney he was a midfielder playing in goals . KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 27/08/2017 10:44:11 2038499 Link 0 |
I think it was the final Kingdom Boy, as a similar incident happened against Galway in Croke Park, only it nearly ended up as an own goal. Keeper kicked the ball out short and seemed to forget about the return pass rolling towards the goal-line.

Once in a club game I saw a defender put the ball over his own crossbar from about 30m out. Some achievement. He went to volley it high in the air and it sliced off his foot right over the black spot. Great point. Unfortunately I was on the same team!
