Pat Gilroy to manage Dublin hurlers?

I see the bookies have stopped taking bets on Gilroy being named Dubs hurling manager. Strange one this. I presume he played club hurling for Vinny's did he? I know Heffo who was his mentor had a huge gra for hurling and coached with the Dubs hurlers for a few years Can a "football man" manage a hurling team at this level? I suppose you could look at Anthony Cunningham and what he did with Garrycastle, but wasn't he a Dual player? Or was he? If it is the case that Pat Gilroy is looking to get back in the game, and this doesnt come to fruition, if I was involved in football in Cork I would on the blower to PG ASAP to give it a rattle. He did an amazing job with the footballers. I'm sure he would bring the same level of focus and determination to the hurling team. He's an operational guy - if appointed, he would surround himself with the right hurling people to succeed. I think he would do a great job. Mick Dempsey managed Laois U21 and Senior footballers in the 1990s and became an integral part of Kilkenny hurling U21 and Senior management teams since 2004. I know he's committed to the footballers, and an excellent footballer but boy would i love to see Con O'Callaghan play inter county hurling. He has the makings of a great. I know the young man can't do everything and it's his decision and silverware is obviously more likely with the footballers. It's not just his skills that impress me but when he's interviewed he's so grounded and such a likeable chap. No nonsense or helmet pulling etc there. I'd wonder if Gilroy came in could he sway some players back into the panel including certain footballers I can't see Gavin letting it happen but that hurling panel would look a lot stronger with the likes of Kilkenny, Costello, the Schutte's, O'Callaghan and others who left the panel altogether Even with them, I don't think Dublin hurling would be winning any All Irelands anytime soon, but having more leaders and skillful players in the panel could inspire the current young players coming through along with the next generation keithlemon (Australia) - Posts: 920 - 17/08/2017 14:21:23 2034689 Link
