This is a meaningless exercise that all the newspapers will indulge in after the season ends....but it's still fun!

I think the top 4 are obvious; Dublin, Kerry, Tyrone, Mayo

Right now I'd have them in that order but we'll find out over the next few weeks

After that it gets contentious. Every team has major questions about them

Donegal - looked like a spent force this year. Supine against Tyrone and Galway

Monaghan - didn't lay a glove on the Dubs, unlike Carlow. Beat Carlow though.

Galway - Tipp, Ros, Kerry...that's three bad beatings in two years

Roscommon - can't see Mayo disposing of any of the other contenders so easily. Relegated too.

Cavan - relegated and lost at home to Tipp

Tipp - lost at home to Armagh. Not enough depth to absorb the losses they've had

Armagh - Looked great against Tipp & Kildare but complete no-show against Tyrone. Failed to get out of Div 3

Kildare - Don't get me started. Great against Meath, showed character against Dubs after conceding two goals but well beneath their own standards v. Armagh. Too many no-shows in Croke Park; Clare, Westmeath, Galway, Armagh

Meath - Can't put them above Kildare after losing badly to them twice this year

Down - did ok against Tyrone when you consider what they did against everyone else. But couldn't back it up against Monaghan

Cork - Snuck past an off-colour Tipp. Meek against Kerry. Best performance was probably the loss to Mayo don't think many would rate them as best of the chasing pack

I'd be interested to see who ye'd rank from 5-12 especially, and why?

From 5 to 12, there's no real difference so I positioned in the context of league position going into next year and performance in 2017.
Given Galway are going to Div 1 and Roscommons blow out today I think Galway are possibly the best placed team together closer to the top 4, and when I say closer I'm not sure how close that is.
A two tier championship could have those 4 in 1 and the rest in the second. That's the reality of it.

The top 8 are pretty clear imo the teams who reached the last 8.
Dublin
Kerry
Tyrone
Mayo
Roscommon (they won a provincial and drew with a top 4 team so makes sense)
Galway
Monaghan
Donegal
Armagh
Down

That's the top 10. The rest ( including Meath) are genuinely not worth talking about , some people will say Kildare showed character against Dublin, but in hindsight the game was over after 15 minutes and Dublin plodded along in second gear and still won by 9 points, the loss to a team that couldn't get out of division 3 I think shows a more worrying trend for Kildare, you always got the feeling that Armagh would win, and their hammering against Tyrone showed they have little to nothing (Jamie Clarke aside) to offer going forward
As for Meath? There was huge improvement in fitness, attitude and team work this year, however I feel we focused on promotion and really the championship was a let down despite winning a game in qualifying for first time in years and a one point defeat to Donegal, however their collapse to Galway was worrying, we never got off the bus v Kildare (who themselves were a shambles afterwards)
But as I said mcentee is a class manager , it's his first year in charge of a county team and he inherited a absolute mess, perhaps too much was expected in year one (I included myself in that) he has now sorted out fitness and attitude, the return of Rooney next year the development of brien Conlon and another year with same group of lads will undoubtedly help.
So to some up Meath year some great improvement in basics (no second half collapses) but really a lot to improve on next year.

Your top 4 is the same as most would put them. After that your analysis on the rest is true to your form. Very insightful, if Meath don't deserve to be in top 10 then Kildare certainly shouldn't be there. Don't know why si many are disagreeing with you by placing us in the ranking.

Look I don't give a rats ass about Kildare.
Here you go. Kildare will be Dublin main rivals next year after a fantastic year. Beat a great Meath team twice. Lost narrowly twice to a fantastic Galway side. Put Dublin to pin of their collars in what was the metropolitan biggest game in 3 years. Lost narrowly to a Fantastic Armagh side. Watch out 2018 it will be all lillies.
Happy???
Now away you go listen to Martin Carmel bs and believe all is rosey in the Lilly garden.

Careful now royaldunne, you'll be giving yourself an ulcer.
If you couldn't care less about Kildare then just stop talking about them : it's really not that complicated.

I found it hilarious that you said "the rest, including Meath are genuinely not worth talking about" then you preceded to give a long rambling self serving monologue about everything Meath. All you have been doing since Meath were knocked out of the Championship is be on here making weak excuses for them such as"didn't get off the bus against Kildare". Did you ever ask yourself why that happened? Could it be some mental weakness in the team? A failure of the management? Maybe Meath just aren't up to it?? You mock Kildare who beat meath easily twice this calendar year for losing to a div 3 team, Kildare were a division 3 team themselves just a year ago. But it is a good observation to say Kildare have gone from div 1 to div 3 and back to div 1 again all while Meath have been stuck spinning their wheels like a bad car in Div 2. Why is that? Maybe Meath are comfortable staying there and never having to play the top sides for fear of what might happen? Maybe the hunger has gone? If so then taking potshots at the teams who are genuinely giving it a go is very sad and lacking in any kind of class.

If we've learned anything after this recent round of quarter finals and qualifiers it's that outside of the Big Four, ranking is meaningless. Any of those teams in the next 6 places could beat each other on any given day but will get picked apart piecemeal once they try to raise their head above the parapet to face the top four.

I think hoganstand agreed with my top 8 and your top 10 was wrong, ah well. Try to be more realistic, Kildare beat cork and down this year and if you forget your bias you'd understand that going to division 1 is important, Meath haven't been there in years and years. The TRIMMINGS you took off us should show you where your lot are in the rankings, apologies to the realistic Meath support but this royaldunne person is unbearable at times
