The All ireland football qualifiers ?

(Oldest Posts First)

How many teams if any have won the All Ireland football after being beat in the early rounds and then gone on to win it through the qualifiers ?

This is at least your second 'bait' thread on here in recent times.

Kerry did it twice.
Tyrone did it twice.
Cork did it once.

There could be more, but none that spring to my mind at present.

6 times I think.

The first one - Galway 2001. Then Tyrone in 05, 08. Kerry in 06 and 09. Cork won it 2010.

Interesting that is hasn't been done in recent years. It is most likely to happen if 2 of the best teams in the country are also in the same province e.g. Armagh and Tyrone in the noughties and Kerry and Cork around 2006-2010.

I think the qualifiers were great when they started out as you got to play teams you normally would never meet but I think they are outdated now and we need something else - groups or whatever.

Maybe you could have the back door just in the provinces themselves. If we break it down as follows:

Leinster has 11 teams. There would be 1 preliminary round. That winner would join the other 9 teams in the first round.
There would be 10 teams in the first round with the 5 winners going into the quarter-finals.
The 5 losers from the first round plus the loser from the preliminary round would go in the losers section.
With 6 teams, the 3 winners from the losers sections would join the 5 winners from the first round in the quarter-finals.

Ulster has 9 teams. There would be 1 preliminary round. The winner would join the other 7 teams in the first round.
There would be 8 teams in the first round with the 4 winners going through the second round.
The 4 losers from the first round plus the loser from the preliminary round would go in the losers section.
There would be a preliminary round in the loser section. Who ever loses this out and the winner would join the other three teams.
In the first round of the losers section the two winners would go through to round 2 while the two losers are out.
In the second round of the Ulster Championship the two winners go through to the semi-finals.
Round two of the loser section would see the round one loser winners playing the losers of the second round of the championship
The two winners would go through the semi-finals.

Connacht would have 6 teams (minus New York). The first round would have 4 teams. The 2 winners would play the 2 teams that received a bye in round 2. The 2 two winners from round 2 would go in to semi-finals. The 4 teams that have not reached the semi-finals would go in to the losers section. The two winners from the loser section would go through to the semi-finals.

There are 6 teams in Munster.

The quarter-finals would be the 8 teams that have reached the provincial and it would follow the pattern as the minor football championship.

I don't like it tbh.

It wouldn't really change the fact that it's easier to progress from different provinces at all.

I really like interprovincial championship matches.

I hate the back door. It only gives the better teams a second chance.

If we got rid of the back door then it would be dublin v tyrone/down and Kerry v Roscommon.

The super 8 means only the strongest teams will win Sam. It removes the chance of say monaghan ever winning sam.
