How strict is Garda Vetting to coach underage team

(Oldest Posts First)

I've been asked to coach an underage team at my club and would like to do it but am a bit worried about the Garda vetting.

I don't really have a criminal record but have been arrested 3 times. I got a caution the first time and then the second time went to court and it was struck out when I made a donation to charity. I also got arrested in the USA when on the J1 and was in jail there for a few days but the charges were dropped. That was 3 years ago and I learnt my lesson and haven't been in any trouble since.

Does anybody know if this will be a problem for me?

You will have no problem at all , its for serious offences like violence and sexual assault

On the scale of things, they sound minor enough transgressions. A caution and a struck out case are not convictions. The main focus of garda vetting is to make sure anyone working with children or vulnerable adults does not have a conviction for a sexual offence. I reckon you will get the green light.

You don't have any convictions according to your OP which is what the form asks - so your answer will be no.

The Garda vetting is asked to sign that you have no convictions so again OK

The caution would be on record though it's not a conviction -

Cant see any issue unless you p@¥$ed off the Garda that brought the original charge and the vetting Garda cross checks with him/her but highly doubtful.

If you list that you lived in US - Im not sure if they cross check but it might delay things so you need to consider if you lived in US that summer or if your postal address was with " mammy"

I assume they were minor charges? I'd so as above poster said you should have nothing to worry about. U suspect you didn't do anything serious because if you did...well you would be still in jail in the states.

Once it wasn't for sex offence, drugs, or violent conduct you will be grand.

Thanks for the info. I should have said what the arrests were for. the first that I got the caution for was assault, the second that got struck out in court was for public order and the one in America was for assault as well.

The thing in America was pretty mad. Like I said i was on the J1 and got into a fight (with another Irish guy) and got arrested. I'm not sure if that counts as living there but the Irish Consul got involved - came to see me in jail - so I am guessing there is a record of it somewhere. The other guy decided not to press charges so the charges were dropped and I got released. They were the worst 4 days of my life in jail there worrying about what could happen. But as I said have not been in trouble since.

You don't really go into what your arrests were for, so I don't think anyone on here can answer you. I don't think this is the forum for such a question anyway. I do find it a bit funny that you're talking about the Gardai and getting arrested and your username has 999 in it.

I just wanted advice from anybody who knows about it or has been through it. Sorry if I am out of order.
