Brendan Murtagh after fifteen years service to Westmeath hurling announced his retirement today. A wonderful servant to Westmeath and hurling in general. Thanks for all the entertainment Brendan

Best of luck to him with his retirement, gave some service to his county, as good as any player I've seen.

Central to all Westmeath hurling success during this period

Well done and good luck

Deserves a mention has been to the fore for Westmeath since they broke back into the big time.
Himself and one of the Mitchell's are names I remember going back as far as 2005.
Enjoy the retirement some stalwart.

It is a pity that the likes of him doesn't get the recognition or the big day to hurl on.

Was the longest serving intercounty player when he retired having made his championship debut a few months before cluxton and mccluskey of Fermanagh. Some commitment for a player who had bleak prospects for success. Great player, deserves more plaudits

A great player, some free taker too. Broke Carlows hearts on many occasions with a winning point, or a couple of times drillling a free to the net against us at vital times.
Yet again another to add to the long list that if he was from a stronger county he'd be a household name by now.
Hopefully he stays involved in Westmeath hurling in some capacity to help bring the county on.

Brendan despite Westmeath not being at the top table didn't do too bad.Railway cup medal,3 Christy Ring medals,2 Nhl div 2 medals,All Ireland intermediate club medal,4 Westmeath senior championships. But for me his two best displays were in defeat.Around 2011/12 in Mullingar in a Leinster sh quarter final vs Galway which lost something like 3-19 to 4-12 he absolutely destroyed several markers.Second the year of the row over the Christy Ring venue against Carlow who were at their very best.Westmeath were decimated by injury but Brendan almost single handedly kept us in scored 3-7 or 8 only for us to lose by a point in extra time.
