Hurlers who put their club on the map

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was thinking over the past few days of hurlers who put their club on the map, at least in modern times. For example, I would say Matthew O'Hanlon has put St. James on the map in a hurling context, they were a football club only up until maybe 20 years ago.
Now I reckon there must be plenty of such hurlers around the country, clubs which were never heard of before and some which haven't been heard of after 1 outstanding player.
For example I had never heard of Lattin Cullen before Nickey English arrived nor have I heard of them or seen the club on a Tipp teamsheet since, Bride Rovers before Brian Murphy arrived, St. Ita's before Seamus Harnedy joined the inter county game, Danesfort before Richie Hogan.

Who are St James? Have they won much?

Id say:
- any of the Cannings and Portunma
- Joe Cooney and Hopper Mc Grath ...Sarsfields
- Joe Rabbitte and Athenry
- Either of the Kerns's and Clarinbridge
- The Burkes and St Thoms

...maybe just because they all won All Ireland seniors tho

I'm aware that Mount Sion would be well known in Waterford and indeed, Munster too, but due to the brilliant Tony Browne they came to my attention.

Could the longevity of some players create an almost familiarity of their clubs?

Tim & Johnny Crowley from Newcestown ....... football country.

Not that he put them on the map but Brendan Cummins being from Ballybacon always made me smile. I thought that town more suited to Declan Ryan .....

Take Mullinahone in Tipperary probably football country until John Leahy arrived. Some of the best hurlers in the country from the last 25 years have come from that tiny village.

Maybe not exactly what the OP intended but Eoghan Conroy from Naomh Maur is getting game time for Dublin this year. A hurler from Rush!!! Great to see.

For those that don't know that'd be like Galway having a hurler from Inis Óirr ;)

Damian Casey, Eoghan Ruadh Hurling club Dungannon, Tyrone, would probably be in contention for a starting place in most counties, though Tyrone playing at a lower level his skills are hardly ever seen

Excellent analogy!

Don't rule out Inis Oirr wining a senior county title in the next 5 years, All Ireland senior club the same year....said no one....ever

A lot of good hurlers in St James far from a one man team.
