RTÉ showing Dublin matches

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I recommend that people write a strongly worded letter/email to RTÉ and demand that they stop wasting our money by showing Dublin matches in Leinster. Micky mouse competition for the last number of years and will be for the next number. Why not show a match like Armagh vs Fermangh or Offaly vs Cavan?? Two matches that will be tight affairs.

That would make too much sense for RTE. Id love to see some of the weaker counties on TV in the early Summer, we will see plenty of the big guns in July and august

ratings.

it's all about the numbers.

All of you giving out about it still took time out of your day to watch it

and more time out of your day after it to complain....

Dublin are the biggest attraction in our games and as much as people hate to admit it, it's just the way it is, and the most popular, most watched teams will get more coverage by the TV companies.

That's the way it's always been. if and when the numbers watching dublin decline, then they might show someone else.

The simple facts are that they will get a far bigger TV audience (and hence Ad rates etc.) for a Dublin game than either of the 2 game you mentioned - the effect of a big population. There is also no guarantee the 2 games you mention will be any good either.

It was a repeat of the last two Leinster finals why wouldn't they decide to show it.
most were saying all week Dublin are vulnerable and not at same level anymore so why would they decide not to show it this year?

It was a Leinster semi final, the biggest game taking place today, so it had to be televised. Unfortunately it was a one way traffic hammering, whilst the likes of Laois & Carlow had a grand old battle in the hurling with the match decided by the minimum & both captains sent to the line.

Then there's a whole host of other reasons why the would televise this fixture - advertising revenue etc.

Spot on. The money they'll make from today's game can fund coverage for other games that don't bring as much revenue. Hard to predict how a match might go. A few thought Westmeath could get within 10 points of the Dubs. A few more thought Monaghan would hammer Down last night.

Going off topic but why are there two qualifiers at 6:30 on a Sunday night?

Painful that it even has to be explained.

Dubs are the big show moneymakers

Simples.

They are the all Ireland champions playing on a day when there's very little else.

What else are they going to show?

They are the top team with the biggest draw of audience, it's a no brainer id say almost every day they are playing and definitely today.

It was something to do with Feiles being on in Cavan, Fermanagh and Armagh

I'd imagine that's because Dublin vs Westmeath was on TV and they wanted to maximize TV coverage and to give the casual, armchair-type supporters of Offaly, Armagh, Fermanagh, and Cavan no excuse for not going to their own county's game!

Quite simply because yous won't watch it in the same numbers as you'll watch the Dubs.

In fairness i only caught a glimse of the score halfway through 2nd half. I said the same last year....no point having it on tv if everyone knows it going to be a 20+ points drumming

Are post-match interviews really any use anyways? I've never really gleamed anything insightful from them in any sport, just the usual list of platitudes and cliches.

Anyone who'd use watching Dublin give Westmeath another tonking as an excuse not to go to their own county's match wouldn't have been going to it anyway, you'd assume!

What baffles me is that RTE would never show Galway v Offaly in a Leinster Hurling Semi-final because they think the result is a foregone conclusion. Yet they will show Dublin trounce Westmeath by 31 points. Anyone in the real world would have predicted a double digit victory for Dublin yesterday.

Dublin are defending AI champs going for 3-in-a-row and therefore are naturally a team to show live. Folk are being silly suggesting RTE should not show a game involving one of the big guns when they are out. Seriously suggesting that RTE should show Offaly v Cavan or someone? What viewing ratings would they have got for that? How much lower would the attendance have being at that game if it was on live?

Dublin are an attraction cos they have a big fan base. On the flip side, most neutrals would have loved seen the underdogs put up it to them. Game was one sided as it turned out but so what, that's sport. Personally I thought it was very enjoyable (I would say that s'pose). Great skills and scores on display. Opposition got to gauge where Dublin are at as we did when Tyrone impressed last time out.

Anyway it's hardly the first time RTE have shown a one sided match. Recall seeing Kerry hammer Waterford, Mayo hammer Sligo etc but no one gets upset enough about such games to post about them. The problem with Dublin, Dublin, Dublin,. Dublin.... a new record needed lads.
