After every bad game of football we usually get a plethora of posts talking about the demise of Gaelic football. Well having spent yesterday plonked on the sofa watching the Sunday Game, I can say without any doubt that Gaelic Football is alive and well.

Using the tried and tested formula of basing the future of the game on the most recent game (there are enough threads on this site without having to list them all) it has to be said that Gaelic Football has never been healthier. Two great games televised yesterday, hard hitting, great scores and everything put on the line played in awful conditions.

The posters on this site have been quick of the block in recent years to lambaste the quality of football on offer, perhaps it's time that they gave credit to two great games of football.

I agree. Monaghan v Cavan was a very tough and close game, the result up for grabs until the very end. Was a very honest game too without gamesmanship. Mayo v Galway was the game we hoped it would be too. We have good games to look forward to next weekend with Meath v Kildare and Donegal v Tyrone. Happy days really.

Think this is the post of the weekend.

People just love to complain don't they. Week in and week out I see people bemoaning the lack of intensity and the lack of attacking football in the Ulster championship but thought yesterdays game between Cavan and Monaghan was really top class. the transition from defence to attack was fast and effective and some of the scores were as good as what you will see all year from both teams. The atmosphere was top notch and the intensity was incredible. It was a truly great championship derby.

As for Galway and Mayo it wasn't much different. A brilliant game of football played in absolutely muck conditions. The first upset of the summer and a truly enjoyable watch.

So to those who complain about black cards, mark slowing down the game etc. I can only say as polite as possible, jog on because that was a truly great weekend of championship football and has completely restored my faith in the game.

Two good games in ulster and Connaught, but have to say the Westmeath Offaly game was horrendous, there is not enough negative words in the dictionary to explain how bad it was with the handpassing , it really was the epitome of puke football, actually I would prefer to puke than have to watch that utter utter disgrace again.

good man gotmilk,,,, you have the pulse of the nation well measured. my only complaint (and hell sure you have to have ONE) is KO'C one of the most talented forwards mayo ever had ...and the playacting that goes on... getting a man black carded and then with a min or two to go pushing the ball against the galway defender while crying hes being held up ..embarrassing stuff ...but hell yes ..bring on more of the same excitement !

Some good even championship clashes Monaghan/Cavan & Galway/Mayo which is what people want to see. This weekend looks good too with Kildare/Meath & Tyrone/Donegal hard to call with any confidence.

In fairness counties with ambition are now coping the Dublin Game plan of moving the ball fast into the danger zones which is the next level from the ultra defensive approach of Donegal a few years back, to what now appears to be a good mix of possession football with precision passing of the ball over a longer distance. One way to overcome the blanket defense is to play past it quickly (if possible). This combined with a dry ball leads to more exciting, faster games with higher scores which we had in the Mayo V Galway game and the Cavan V Monaghan game. Like a good game of hurling these are far more enjoyable to watch as there is constant movement. Hopefully this will encourage back supporters who had become tierd of watching a hundred hand passes in a game and less then 20 scores..
Looking forward to an entertaining summer, going on last weekend ........

Yeah I think we went through a bad few years where people copied Donegal after their success but concentrated more on Donegal 2014 v Dublin rather than Donegal 2013.

Ulster had a bad championship last year and a bad league this year I feel teams are coping with the blanket defence.

Teams like Galway, Kildare, Cavan are getting closer to the top tier making things more competitive again.

Dublin, Kerry and Mayo were so far ahead of the chasing pack and that seems to be less the case now.

I'm actually looking forward to see what the winner of Meath and Kildare can do against the Dubs. Would have laughed at the thoughts in previous years but have hope that they can improve on their big wins with a decent performance against the Dubs.Bring a bit of craic back to Leinster.

Also looking forward to seeing Tipp in the qualifiers.. Think they could make a 1/4 final. Mayo's backdoor escape once again means that even the qualifiers will be full of drama when you throw in Donegal after we beat them. Cavan won't be a push over either and Monaghan will be a big test for us after Donegal; one I honestly think we could lose.

Then Cork and Kerry; hopefully a bit of drama like the old days.

Galway. How could I forget Galway. A croke park win would make things very interesting this summer!
