At the risk of sounding like Trump - sad! essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 1141 - 07/06/2017 12:58:33 1996408 Link 1 |
Correct , a once great competition has been dying for years but that's how it goes , I can state I have never seen myself as a Leinster man and have no affinity to my province , it just has never been on my radar I cheered against Meath any time they got to an All Ireland , I supported Offaly and Kildare (once ) when they played in Sept , Why Ulster supporters have the affinity I was talking about is I reckon a political / historical kinship

Sad indeed, especially as we won the thing for the first time in donkey's years 2 seasons back. Thing is, if the players no longer want it, who are we keeping the thing going for? I've been at Railway Cup games in McHale Park with one man and his dog present. Donnelly got behind the interpros with sponsorship and playing it abroad and still it didn't really arrest its slump. Fitting it into a crowded county and club calendar has proven increasingly difficult, so what's left to be tried in terms of marketing, scheduling etc? I've never identified as being from Leinster to be honest. It's not a real province in anyways, unlike Munster, Ulster and Connacht which do have identities of sort. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13707 - 07/06/2017 13:49:56 1996448 Link 0 |
When it was played just prior to the national league, it was a surely a very useful exercise for the Galway hurlers. Strange that both codes have withdrawn. Passer_By (Carlow) - Posts: 509 - 07/06/2017 13:50:01 1996449 Link 0 |
I think its more its more the Culture in Ulster, six counties in particular ,they want to comepete and proud of their identity. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2763 - 07/06/2017 14:01:01 1996455 Link 0 |

There is no interest from the public in this competition. Anyone seriously get excited about it? yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11231 - 07/06/2017 14:36:29 1996490 Link 0 |
I quite like it. Been to a few games. Would like to see it played in a 'Barbarian' spirit or take inspiration from State of Origin and just have players go for it without worrying about consequences. RoyalBadger (Meath) - Posts: 571 - 07/06/2017 14:57:59 1996503 Link 0 |
I think it should be played as part of the compromise rules series. The Aussies can come here and play a few games against the provincial teams and then play the international test series or something. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 07/06/2017 15:46:39 1996540 Link 0 |
Would Connaught without the Galway hurlers be in any way competitive? liam500 (Wicklow) - Posts: 175 - 07/06/2017 15:50:38 1996543 Link 0 |

If the GAA had an ounce of business sense they would ditch the compromise rules, put their full backing behind the interpros, support it and market it properly and very quickly you would have a competition that would rival the likes of the State of Origin no problem.
