Connacht pulling out of Railway Cup

At the risk of sounding like Trump - sad!

Some great open football in the interpro competition. And a great novelty factor seeing players from normally opposing teams on the same team.

Provincial identity only seems to matter to Ulster GAA and in the rugby. Doesn't seem to matter to GAA people in other 3 provinces?

Correct , a once great competition has been dying for years but that's how it goes , I can state I have never seen myself as a Leinster man and have no affinity to my province , it just has never been on my radar I cheered against Meath any time they got to an All Ireland , I supported Offaly and Kildare (once ) when they played in Sept , Why Ulster supporters have the affinity I was talking about is I reckon a political / historical kinship

Sad indeed, especially as we won the thing for the first time in donkey's years 2 seasons back. Thing is, if the players no longer want it, who are we keeping the thing going for? I've been at Railway Cup games in McHale Park with one man and his dog present. Donnelly got behind the interpros with sponsorship and playing it abroad and still it didn't really arrest its slump. Fitting it into a crowded county and club calendar has proven increasingly difficult, so what's left to be tried in terms of marketing, scheduling etc?

I've never identified as being from Leinster to be honest. It's not a real province in anyways, unlike Munster, Ulster and Connacht which do have identities of sort.

When it was played just prior to the national league, it was a surely a very useful exercise for the Galway hurlers. Strange that both codes have withdrawn.

There is no interest from the public in this competition. Anyone seriously get excited about it?

I quite like it. Been to a few games.

Would like to see it played in a 'Barbarian' spirit or take inspiration from State of Origin and just have players go for it without worrying about consequences.

I think it should be played as part of the compromise rules series. The Aussies can come here and play a few games against the provincial teams and then play the international test series or something.

An awful lot of people hate the compromise rules as well of course. That won't be a runner.

Would Connaught without the Galway hurlers be in any way competitive?

If the GAA had an ounce of business sense they would ditch the compromise rules, put their full backing behind the interpros, support it and market it properly and very quickly you would have a competition that would rival the likes of the State of Origin no problem.

The best of the best playing each other over the course of two weekends, such an easy sell for any competent marketer and yet instead years of neglect has seen it die a slow death.

Just shows where the priorities are for certain sections of the GAA leadership.
