Ridiculous Bias towards Ulster Shown by RTE

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Why are RTE isisiting on showing basically every single match in the Ulster Football championship this year and almost zero coverage of the other provinces.Considering the downright poor quality of so much of Ulster Football in recent years surely they should have some sense and spread their coverage around so we avoid the almost guaranteed negativity we get with the Ulster championship these days.

Simple reason, as another poster pointed out elsewhere, Cost saving, they will use the feed off the BBC.

For answer please refer to the numerous threads on HS on the competitiveness of the different Provinces. Thank You.

Why don't they just show replays on the 1982 final on a loop? It's what you seem to want.

I'm guessing it might be cost related as BBC are also televising the Ulster Championship games. maybe they're sharing the cost and/or the video coverage.

Rather than saying why are RTE showing match X rather than match Y, we should be asking why we cannot see live coverage of all matches via a dedicated channel / red button option or some sort of streaming service. Then you could decide which match you want to watch. How in this day and age can a cracking game like Carlow v Longford be reduced to a 2 minute highlights reel for example. I'd love to watch that match some evening during the week / on demand.

But I suppose your post is not really about RTE. its a dig at 'Ulster' football. We have 3 on-sided matches so far, that's the luck of the draw, but I'd expect all the rest to be very competitive affairs. I'm sure that still wouldn't please you though.

Yeah. It's been very competitive so far this year what with an average margin of victory of over 10 points inthe 3 games they've showed.

I actually do have a problem with the lack of variety in coverage. The same game is being show repeatedly on 2 seperate channels.Laois v Kildare could be a good game on Sunday and nobody has the option to see it.

No one is arguing the Ulster is the most competitive province that fact is well established , however theres a difference between competitive province and non competitive fixtures , Ulster has thrown up some very uncompetitive fixtures to date and they were known before hand that they were miss matches

That was the Offaly v Westmeath hurlers.

How many would go to watch the Armagh v Down hurlers?

Hows the fishing trip going.

Considering the majority of the negativity is coming from wise sages such as yourself there's a simple solution, turn it over. Which games would you have rather tuned into over the last few weeks.

Personally I'd take more umbrage with their lack of coverage of the Christy Ring latter stages but realistically they cant show everything. Anyway hope you get a few bites.

I haven't a clue why RTE show mainly Ulster games this time of year.

But here's their phone number if you want to find out : 01 208 3111

I reckon Ulster football has been the most competitive, more noticeable since the backdoor was introduced in 2001 and some teams not trying as hard in their province knowing they have a second chance. They had half of the teams competing in Division 1 thus year. Will be more competitive from now on , team standards are more evenly matched.

The three victorious Ulster teams can rightly expect to reach the quarter finals this year. And the viewing public of Ireland probably want to see these teams more than the alternatives on the day. What games should they have shown instead of those Ulster games that would draw in the biggest national audience?

You could POSSIBLY argue that the down Armagh game won't produce the provincial winner this year.

Every other game involves a team likely to win ulster.

Kerry and Dublin will walk their 1 sided provinces so while Laois Kildare may well be a cracker (as I'm sure Carlow Wexford was) these matches are mere sideshows.

I've been told Leitrim London was the best match last weekend. I watched the Tyrone Derry game and it was muck. But in the context of the all ireland championship, we now have a reasonable (if uncertain) idea of where Tyrone are at while, let's face it, it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things where London or leitrim are (and I don't mean to offend wither side when I say that - the same could be said of the majority of counties).

Oh and I should add. .the real reason is that they don't have to send their cameras to ulster games and can piggy back off the BBC
