Championship Superstitions

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Do people have any personal superstitions/piseogs as a supporter before Championship matches they would like to share?

I've a few. On the way to Kerry's first game of every new Championship I have to buy a new wrist-band that I have to wear for every game that summer, so at this stage I've about 20 of them stuffed in a drawer somewhere at home.

I also have to buy a match programme for every game and if I can't or their sold out I find myself getting really tense.

For the 2014 AI final I actually brought the match programme from the semi-final replay against Mayo in my back pocket because I was convinced that during that match in Limerick Mayo were getting the upper hand everytime I had the programme in my hand, but everytime I stuffed it into my pocket, Kerry seemed to get on top and eventually ran out winners. Sounds sad I know, but I was convinced it was a good luck charm if it as in my pocket!!!

Have to get a program for any match that I am at (bar club league games where there aren't any).

It used to be that I only time I would get a train would be to go to matches. There used to be 'special' trains for all Cork matches in Limerick, Killarney, Dublin etc. Great craic. Wouldn't travel any other way. Now, I'd barely travel or if so, it would be by car or bus.

Any superstitions I used to have died a long time ago when it comes to Mayo in finals.

I have to wrap my ham sandwiches in tinfoil with the shiniest side out. I opened the boot on North Circular Rd after mass one Sunday and found I'd made a mistake. Threw the lot in the bin and turned for home...

Good thread to be fair Hermit ya auld rogue :)

Not a match day superstition, but, I always bless myself going passed graveyards or churches, if i even so much as see a steeple in my eyes view i will bless myself. Limerick City is full of churches, I'd say some people think I am some holy Joe going around town, I bless myself so often!!

If I bless myself accidentaly going passed a Protestant church, i have to bless myself 3 times to "correct it" !!!!

Mad thing is.............I havent been to Mass outside of funerals or wedding, of my own volition in YEARS!

Its just a habit given to me by me old Nana God rest her!

Ha :-)

Did you not know if you bless yourself outside a Protestant church the devil moves 10 meters closer to you. Not sure if doing a further 3 times moves him backwards though or if it just brings him 30 meters closer.

You can't be serious?!!!! Bloody hell now there is a man that's superstitious!!!!

Oh I forgot to mention Magpie's, EFFIN Magpie's.

On match day's I'm terrified of seeing them, one for sorrow, two for joy etc etc.

Worse the effers are all over the parks in Dublin!

I was walking through one last year on the way to Croker for the semi-final and what did I see out of the corner of my eye, but one of the Black and White whores looking at me, I knew Kerry's goose was cooked then before a ball was even thrown in.

Then on the way to the League final last month I spotted two of them landing in front of me, and I knew we would win.

I'm a fecking slave to them at this stage, someone was saying if you salute a lone magpie it negates it, but I don't know. I just hope I don't see any of them before a match this summer!

One of my Championship Superstitions is that I give my better half a good poking before and after a match.

not so much a superstition, more a habit, I absolutely have to travel to a game in croker on my own. Same with most of the away games. I'll meet everyone there or whatever but that travelling with people and making conversation just isn't for me until I step.off the bus or get out of the car, then by all means you won't stop me nattering away, but just on the journey to the game, that's my time. don't wanna be interacting with anyone just wanna listen to my rebel tunes and (if I'm on the bus) look out the window and just take in the surroundings and all that lark. if someone sits beside me who I know I will blank them. Thankfully most of the people I travel with know my routine.

I have Liam's one with the churches , but I have to bless my self passing any holy objects that includes monuments.

I also have the hermits fear of magpies but also like Liam I heard once you salute them you'll be fine.

My biggest superstition is not to read any articles in news papers till after a game, il buy the papers on the morning of the game and throw them in the boot of the car and read them only when I get home.

Ollie that's a good one lad, I think we' ll all be chancing that one :-)

Yeah I know where you are coming from, if it is a big match like an All-Ireland final I much prefer to get away and walk in myself to the game or at least take a good walk by myself from where I'm staying to where ever I'm meeting people before. Anything just to get away by myself for a while and let the tension and nerves build.

I actually don't like meeting people at all before big big games if I'm honest. You start to get distracted with chat and once a pint or two goes in the tensions seeps away a bit. I like the tension. I like the nerves and the fear.

I much prefer to do my drinking and socilaising after a game, but the problem is if you lose your in a foul humour and all you want to do it go home and sit in a dark room drinking by yourself :D
