While there is many people who missed out, what are peoples opinion on those picked in hoganstand ? Now ok I am biased I know this, I expected to see two meath players only, one was Graham Geraghty (who made list) other was Trevor Giles. Now as I said I am biased but hardly too much for those two to be included. I wont name who should be dropped. But there I think one included who is a stretch to say the least. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 02/05/2017 17:10:34 1984010 Link 0 |
Can't argue with you either - it would have to be picked purely on those players at that specific age for it to be really fair. I think a few on there are picked because of their whole careers. I'm sure there's loads of others with a huge shout, Aaron Kernan etc etc Brolly (Monaghan) - Posts: 4472 - 02/05/2017 19:36:44 1984052 Link 0 |
Yeah I think it is been based on senior success afterwards rather than purely u21 performance at their time.

You could probably name 5 or 6 really top u-21 teams over the years. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11229 - 02/05/2017 21:43:30 1984074 Link 0 |

It's a daft idea trying to pick such a team. What I find most strange is the outlining of their achievements in their post 21 years, gained playing on very strong teams. What has that got to do with how they actually played in their U21 years? I wonder how many U21 stars opted out of coumty football, or indeed the GAA, soon afterwards. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 02/05/2017 22:40:57 1984084 Link 0 |
Under 21s coverage on TG4 only going for a small percentage of the competition, add to that if games aren't covered and there is no highlights programmes of under 21s Id love to know how lads feel they can be subjective in picking a team it's highly unlikely that RD travelled around the country watching the finest in Kerry to Tyrone ? Thus it's based on games majority attended which featured their own county ,I could pick a best Dublin under 21 over last 15 years or so but I wouldn't have a clue in picking best from around the country , but the again there are wiser men than me on here Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 03/05/2017 07:50:22 1984098 Link 1 |
One of the greatest U-21 players was Grey Blaney who won an U-21 All-Ireland in 1979 as a 16 yr old. Played from '79 - 83 inclusive . cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1672 - 03/05/2017 08:30:40 1984102 Link 1 |
Graham Geraghty was the best underage player I ever saw playing (I saw him playing at Minor and U21). His performances at centre back on Meath minor team which won All Ireland in 1990 were unreal. Trevor Giles for me was one the best senior players of the 1990's (he won Texaco player of the year in '99 and All Star player of the year in '96 and '99) but at underage level I do not remember him being as good as Graham Geraghty.

This thread should read 'the best ever meath u21 team' because it is almost impossible to have an opinion about outside counties over the years, due to lack of tv coverage and media coverage. We only see our own county players and who they are playing against, unless you audit the last 3 or 4 years or thereabouts when there was some tv coverage for the u21 competition. I could mention half a dozen mayo or donegal players but I would be pulling the mayo players out of thin air, and also would be relying on people to have seen the donegal lads I have seen, which would be a long shot if you were from outside the county. This is a daft excercise as it has nothing to do with the u21 grade as others have mentioned, it is their careers after, which have coloured the choices, Michael Meehan won two u21s and was one of the hottest prospects in football along with Sean Armstrong, unfortunately injuries took their toll and we never quite saw them hit those heady heights. duckula20 (Antrim) - Posts: 175 - 03/05/2017 10:24:20 1984150 Link 0 |
Canavan is Canavan he won 2 on his own basically when tyrone were on their knees. redhanddefender (Tyrone) - Posts: 913 - 03/05/2017 10:48:46 1984155 Link 0 |
Trevor Giles was an awesome player but the bottom line on this selection seems to be an u21 all-ireland win and Giles's is only as a sub so stands to reason he's not included. You'd need to be the star player on a AI winning side. Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12116 - 03/05/2017 11:06:46 1984159 Link 0 |

How can you pick Dermot Early (won 1) in mid-field and leave out Cormac Mc Anallen ffs (won 2). He should be captain as well. He was a winner for every team he played with including UCD in the Dublin championship mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1044 - 03/05/2017 21:15:25 1984313 Link 0 |
Dermot Earley absolutely deserves to be in the team.Won his U21 All-Ireland winner's medal as an 18 year old.Went on to be one of the best players never to win a senior All-Ireland medal.Lost the senior Final in 1980 to the greatest gaa team of all time.A Roscommon icon and hero.

Jack O'Se of Kerry won three (3) under 21's and missed out on a fourth, losing to Roscommon by a point, in the final. Gaa Fan (USA) - Posts: 749 - 06/05/2017 16:13:37 1984834 Link 0 |
What about Michael Meehan he won two u21 all Ireland's.He won one against the dubs in 02 and one against down in 05 I think he should be on this team. bud14 (Galway) - Posts: 296 - 06/05/2017 17:26:20 1984845 Link 0 |
