Division 2 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

People on here saying that Kildare won't do Meath a favour by beating Galway. Don't forget in 2011 in the last round of matches Meath drew with Tyrone in Navan and they looked like going down to Division three until a very late stoppage point from Kildare beat Sligo by a point in Newbridge. The end result was that Sligo and Meath had the same amount of points but Meath stayed up because they had beaten Sligo on the head to head. It would be great for Leinster football if Dublin, Kildare and Meath were all playing Division one next year.

Kildare are in an ideal position
they can travel to salthill safe in the knowledge there promoted
and can give it a lash and go for it
all the pressure is on galway to perform

Traditionally Kildare dont beat Galway. That's certainly not going to change Sunday with promotion already secured. Sundays a day for squad players to get a full 70 mins and trying out positional changes/tactics etc. A lot of lads put in a big shift this league and will be rested for when it matters to Kildare and not Meath. We'll have a real cut off Galway in the league final.

Double header next Sunday in Pearse Stadium, Galway V Kildare at 2 and the hurlers playing Waterford at 4 in 1/4 finals.

Hopefully Galway supporters will come out in big numbers to support both teams. .

Agreed. There is no way Kildare are not going to beat Galway on Sunday. Thats not a slight on Kildare who have been excellent in the league and are a proud county. It's just that it wouldn't make sense to put out their best 15 against a highly motivated Galway team for a match that means little to them. They'll be saving themselves for the final and rightly so.

This whole scenario however does reflect poorly on the idea of having finals in a league format. If for example, there was no final, Kildare would be obliged to go all out as the Div 2 League title would be at stake. This would then be fairer on the teams below them such as Meath in instance.

As for Meath, we've paid the price for not showing up against Kildare and Down and then for the cocky and poor decision making in the closing minutes against Cork. You can't not show up in two matches and expect to get promoted.

Wouldn't having no league final be even more "unfair" on Meath? If only the top team won the league, then Meath would already by out since they can't finish top of the table. Having 2 final spots ensures more teams have interest going into the last round.

Good point about the final, perhaps if the team finishing on top were to be given a home final as in other sports it would be a fairer system

Yeah Ronan Sweeney said it when being interviewed afterwards, they were the hardest hitting team we've faced all year according to the players. Couple of yellow and black cards shown yesterday to both teams but there didn't seem to be any dangerous tackles or anything over the top really.

Brilliant to be up with a game to spare and nice to get 18 scores with our first choice full forward line missing. Can give the likes of Peter Kelly and Leper a start next week and maybe try out a few of the under 21's who haven't really got a lot of game time yet this year either - Shea Ryan, Pascal Connell etc. Paddy Woodgate and a few others played in some challenge matches recently so they might come into consideration as well.

We have a pretty settled starting 15 now so at the same time O'Neill might just want to continue letting them play to keep the momentum up.

Nice to be looking forward to a day out in Croke Park at least, you'd imagine the Dubs will there for the Division 1 final and if Meath were to make the final as well it'd be a pretty decent crowd.

It's unfair that it's done on head to head in the first place. If there were home and away fixtures then fair enough but the team lucky enough to have the home fixture that particular year surely gets an advantage if it comes to head to heads. Score difference is a better reflection of the league as a whole

the team that tops the league should be the league winners
that would make the galwayv kildare game a league title decider
if galway win as it is there promoted
having a league final is pointless really

The score difference/head to head argument will never satisfy anyone. If it was score difference you'd have lads giving out "how can Y be ranked ahead of X on the table if X beat Y in their match? It's a disgrace!".

The next best thing the GAA can do is just choose one system and stick with it, which is what they've done with head to head (except for Ulster, who use scoring average in the McKenna cup for some bizarre reason).

Yeah it'll never please everybody.

If you go on head to head you give the advantage to the team who were at home between the 2. If you go on scoring difference then you're giving the same advantage to teams who have 4 home games over those who have 3.

Unless you have equal home and away games (9 per division with 5 in Division 4 playing each other twice?) there's never going to be a perfect balance.

That's the problem with Meath alright, talentless gym-monkies and not enough natural footballers...

It's hard to believe Kildare got promoted, but there you go- on form the best team in the division and therefore deserving of that promotion.
Kildare were probably some peoples favourites to be relegated to division 3, however we are guaranteed that can't happen for a couple of years.
Hanging around in division 2 could be a good place to build, on the other hand if you don't take it seriously enough it could have you relegated to division 3 in 2018.
Looking forward to having the top teams in Newbridge next year!

There will be no promotion for Meath this year. You would have fancied Galway at home to Kildare anyway but with Kildare already promoted they are bound to be lacking in motivation. But regardless nice to see a bit of a positive feel coming back to Meath football. I think we will beat Clare and hopefully follow up with a bit of improvement in a the coming championship.

In the good oule days if two teams finished level on the same number of points when the league was over there was a play off. You would also have quarter-finals where the top four teams in Division One, the two teams in Division Two and the top team in Division three and Division four would go through the last eight. Can you imagine if that happened last year? The pairings you would get would of been:

First in Div 1 v First in Div 4: Dubs v Antrim (Could be played in Newry)
Second in Div 1 v First in Div 3: Kerry v Kildare (Could be played in Thurles)
Third in Div 1 v Second in Div 2: Roscommon v Cavan (Could be played in Longford)
Fourth in Div 1 v First in Div 2: Donegal v Tyrone (Could be played in Derry)

Semi Finals:
Dubs/Antrim v Donegal/Tyrone
Kerry/Kildare v Roscommon/Cavan

Match itself, I expect a reaction from Meath today after throwing away the game in cork and particularly McEntee comments, it won't be easy but Meath to prevail (hopefully)"
"Throwing the game away in Cork" Another one of your classic comments RD.

Cork were 9 points up at one stage whilst Meath were never more than a point up.

As for Meath their certainly going in the right direction although it won't be easy down in Clare as they need the points too. Who knows what Kildare will turn up in Galway although given the potential for a Meath v Kildare Leinster semi I doubt O'Neill would want to be facing Meath in a league decider.
