You cant ban Gleeson after letting Touhy off.

Technically, the same incidents

Replying To tiobraid:  "I'm hoping Waterford can do it. They deserve it. Incredibly consistent for 15 years or more in getting to last 4.
I think they will do it too. Austin Gleeson won't be a huge loss to them in the way he has played this year. Maurice is far more effective even tho he's always double marked.i wouldn't be too down beat if I was a Waterford man if he is. Conor Gleeson is likely to be the far bigger loss of the twp in the system they play. Gleeson was exceptionally poor until Waterford got ahead today.
Waterford have the hunger but most of all the panel to win it and I'd be very confident they will. A lot of people over stated the level of the tipp galway game. It was a game riddled with errors and Galway are if anything not as good this year as last.
Waterford to do enough for me."
The reason Galway disimproved since last year, tiobraid, is because we 'wintered' in div1B of the NHL, and failed dismally to promote from it. It's a minor miracle for a div1B team to make an all-ireland final, especially one that wasn't good enough to 'promote' back to 1A.

The Gaa's failure to apply rules & discipline is always coming back to haunt them & so it is again, the lead up to this final will be dominated by talk of suspensions. If rules are applied neither of the Gleesons should play, obviously Austin is a very talented hurler but has a short fuse. The video on YouTube of a pull in a club game leaves little to the imagination. The Gaa will bottle this in some shape or form allowing one or both of them to play. If both are banned it will make it easier for Galway & if Galway won it would be always thrown at them that they did so due to the suspensions. Another typical mess by the Association, just like the black card farce. The governance at the top at present is slow, laboured & too slow to implement change.

If Galway win they do not care who said what. Remember when Keady got 12 months but Delaney got zero for same infraction and collected his winning medal in '89? I hope the Gleeson's do play but I do not know how Galway will end the Waterford record. Two great teams but I fancy WF with their goal scoring abilities, they were written off against Cork too. They must be favorites.

One clearly deliberate and intentional though. The other is far more debatable.

At least if he gets away with it you can say he only made one attempt to grab the helmet unlike another player who took three goes to pull it off...

Replying To ballydalane:  "Well, they had a clear law on helmet interference, a yellow card. Then they upgraded it to a red card which has led to the current farce because a lot of refs and disciplinary authorities don't have the stomach to enforce it. So, deprived of the option of giving "minor" helmet interference a yellow card, many refs choose to pretend they never saw it."
This is totally correct. A red card for this is the problem and will get worse with straps left open etc. Players get away with no sanction for burying the hurley in the ribs and slapping on wrists. It is very simple. A yellow card on the field first offence. If the player is seriously injured and can not continue a red card. A player receiving a second yellow card in one season an automatic 1 game suspension.
Who ever came up with this did not think through the consequences of it. Stephen Bennett deliberate and De Burca incidental ended up with the same punishment. Now Touhy no action on the field cleared because he was looking away. What will they do with Austin? More deliberate but looking away also. What a mess. The proper use of a yellow card and Austin should be carrying one into the final. Then it would be in his own hands if he wanted to have another moment of madness. As a Waterford supporter it is hard to feel sorry for him but not for his team mates and Waterford people.

Austin Gleeson will definitely be banned. We want to see the best players in the final but rules are rules. I hurled for 30 odd years and never felt the need to put the helmet off anyone.

If this rule has done one this this year, it has highlighted the amount of times helmets are actually interfered with. Intentional interference should be an automatic 4 week ban. That would cut it out fairly quick. Gleeson gained absolutely nothing by pulling his helmet off, he knew exactly what he was doing and made that decision himself. He will now miss out of the most coveted day in any GAA persons life. A terrible pity but rules are rules.

Totally agree but how can you prove this?

I cannot see Austin being punished for this reason.

Interestingly, Touhy escaped post-match punishment because the ref's report addressed the incident and the rationale behind the ref's approach to it. Consequently, as it had been addressed per se during the game, the CCC were powerless to follow-up. So it all boils down to whether or not the ref does the same for Gleeson's action. If it's in his report, in a way that shows the ref believed he addressed the incident, he's in the clear. If not, he'll have to face the CCC and he could be in trouble.

Either way it was a fierce stupid thing to do in light of all the press this issue is getting, and the impact it's already had on the Waterford team.

Neither of you clearly understand the purpose of rules in the prevention of injury. There is no way a player could know the consequence of their actions before they do something like this therefore the only way to ensure player safety is that its a straight red. If you had a kid playing and his helmet got pulled off and he last.an ear would you accept the offending player saying that he thought he wouldn't hurt your lad by doing it? It's like a drunk driver saying that he only had to diver 100meters and thought he wouldn't hurt anyone. The expectation of being caught and punished regardless of injury has to be there to prevent it happening in the first place. Yes the GAA needs to wise up on dangerous tackles - over the past few weeks you have seen illegal hits that would have ended up in red cards in rugby. Far more needs to be done to protect the player from players doing stupid things and the only way to get this across to players will be more red cards. BTW was it Kevin Moarns hit? That to me was dangerous and deserved a red. Cork player was bent over and he came in and hit straight onto the side of the head. Nothing manly about that.

Good post Zinny. Rules cannot rely on "common sense" for their implementation on a game to game basis and the argument that someone meant no harm, or that it was a spur of the moment decision that resulted in no injury can't be valid defenses. I don't know what Gleeson was thinking pulling the helmet off a lad on the ground; if a suspension comes of it he has no-one to blame but himself.

Optimistic that this will be a great final with the best 2 teams in it. Gleeson's will both play I'd say and De Burca, making Galway huge underdogs in this, the comeback in the league was a freak show against WF. Hope James Owens is not the ref. I still think Galway can pull a surprise even if he has the whistle.

It's the final I wanted to see, but I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed as I think Galway will win this with a good bit to spare possibly by 10 points or more.
How many times have we seen Tipp take Waterfords sweeper system to the cleaners over the last few years. Galway have the best Manager in the game at the moment and was part of that Tipp camp that tore the sweeper apart. I can't wait for the final and to see new champions, couldn't begrudge either Waterford or Galway an all Ireland at this stage.

It will be great to see on of these two lift Liam McCarthy in 3 weeks time. They have been so consistent over the last number of years and will be very deserving champions.

Hopefully now both counties can enjoy the build up to a unique final and put all the rest of the side shows to one side. Both teams deserve their place in the final
