Galway v Waterford Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Huge congrats to Galway!

Deserved win, and I've been onto my Galway cousins who are of course over the moon. Happy for them and for GAA in Galway who have produced many great underage teams in both codes during their hurling famine

This is a richly deserved title to a great GAA county

My heart goes out to Waterford and this is a young enough team and I'd like nothing more to see them win it next

Chin up. You played very well but Galway were just that extra 5% better

Enjoy your celebrations Galway posters

I agree. People have made similar comments about Joe in the past when Galway have come up short. Gleason is a tremendous talent but Today was just not his day.

Well done Galway on a great year and hard luck Waterford.

What was Austin Gleeson doing taking that last free when if anything he should have been inside waiting to collect a ball that should have been dropped into the square..

Replying To ballydalane:  "The Hail Mary sideline cut and free from his own 45 both going wide when his team were crying out for ball to go into them as they needed a goal sums up Austin. He'd rather go for the glory himself from a low-percentage situation than the "boring" option of lobbing the ball into the square."
Absolutely spot on post ballydalane. I just can't understand all the talk about him. When I saw him going back to take that last free i called it that he was going to go for his point. Madness when you're 3 points down. And he petulantly kicked the ball away at the end when he knocked the ball over the sideline which wasted his own team's time. Last year after the semi final replay I said he needed to add vision, decision-making and passing to his game if he was going to amount to be a good hurler, but he didn't improve in any of these areas. He has some natural talent but you need to add the above to be deemed a good hurler, never mind a great.

Too much expectation on Gleeson......he is a fine hurler but I think he is over hyped and that isn't helping his development.......unfortunately this happens with the media at times and they lose the run of themselves about certain players

Was Canning carrying an injury for much of the second half today?

wanted waterford to win to delighted for galway and joe canning

however out of respect for traditions past
1 there should have been at least one ad during the game showing joe cooney senior dosing a cow while having it in a headlock
2 there should have been interviews in dressing rooms with the players drinking mile to beat the band
3 gerry mac junior should have worn white boots
4 there should have been a rendition of the west awake =though my da (who was at the 1980 final-hates "that song" )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YjhL9qFk08
5 post match studio analysis should have been done by an emotional joe connolly

just kidding

congratulations galway, enjoy it lads -well earned

Congrats to Galway all that hurt drove them on but you have to feel sorry for Waterford. They were still in with a shout at the end but their key players were tied down most of the game and when you don't have Shane Bennett and Austin Gleeson scoring its hard to peg back the scoreboard. When the game was opening up someone like Bennett if on the field could have got in for a goal.Maurice probably had his worst game in a Waterford jersey for as long as I can remember. Tommy Ryan scored a fantastic point easily the point of the game.
However its all the about winners and Galway with that whirlwind start was the winning of the game. The only team to come out and play like that in an all ireland final from from the off was Kilkenny. Thats how highly I hold this Galway team. Leaders stood up and every player had a part to play. Its actually hard to say one Galway player had a bad game.
Now that Galway have finally won I hope Waterford can win not too far in the distant future.Minor and U21 success albeit beating Galway in both finals can only mean the county has a steady stream of talent to work with.
Here's to 2018 already fast forward the clock someone I for one cannot wait.

I think its harsh to say their key players were tied down. Some of them gave exceptional perfomances. Barron, Moran, De Burca and Brick are their 4 key men and they were 4 of the best players on the pitch yesterday. They were exceptional and were the ones to drag Waterford into the game after a very slow and nervous start. Conor Whelan got one ball off Connors and only when he appeared to have gotten a knock before hand. Galway were the more complete team and deserving winners but I don't think the main Waterford men could've done much more

Well, I'm sure it's not nice either being an inside forward on the Waterford team in the dying moments of an All-Ireland final with your team 3 points down and watching the ball sail harmlessly wide from 90 yards because your star player doesn't want to finish the match scoreless, but it happened.

For me the big turning point was when Waterford were a point up and Kevin Moran got a ball in oceans of space he'd only one man to beat and he was in on goal and Moran has pace to burn so he surely would of fancied himself beating that last Galway defender but maybe he was too tired and instead went for an easy point that he hit wide , massive turning point in the game imo. Now Galway were the better team and dererved their win but a goal there could of changed everything.

PS "lune balls" - never has a typo been more apt!

Delighted for Galway. A historic day and the celebrations will go on for the week. Hard luck to Waterford....keep at it.

I thought all the way through it Galway were going to win......they just seemed to be able to score more fluidly/easier when they really needed to........the goals are what kept Waterford in it, both of which were easily preventable.......think only two starting forwards for Waterford scored Mahoney and Brick which isn't going to ever be enough to win an all Ireland, Glynn was only starting forward for Galway not to score.........I would love to see Waterford just come out and play, think they should trust themselves more and just go for it.........yes they are competitive with this system but not sure they will ever win an all Ireland with it

Well, wasn't that a good day yesterday..... unreal stuff from the minors and the seniors finally bringing Liam back west.... I've never seen so many Galway jerseys in my life, there were some numbers in and around Dublin. Brilliant brilliant day and Galway will be on fire tonight!!!!! Up the tribesmen!!!!

Best of luck to Waterford going forward too, they still have a load of youngsters coming through so if wont be the end of them even if a few do call it a day. Keep it going lads, you'll get to the promised land too...

Right team won , was cheering for Waterford
Big lesson for Austin Gleeson to be learned , game passed him by
On the game was stunned by handling errors , some savage scores was definitely a mixed bag , was refed well , not a classic

Well firstly credit to Galway, Smokie lived next door to Alice for longer than they waited to bring Liam across the Shannon. It is great to see players who have suffered repeat heartbreak, no more than the rest of us, at the hands of Kilkenny, finally get over the line.
I know it is not a day to knock players, but if Waterford are to get over the line, Austin Gleeson needs to become more of a team player. The long range shots, even the goal v Cork, if a Cork player had flicked the ball away, the Brick would have killed him and rightly so. Long range pot shots, when they go over, are a great roar from the crowd, but 3 points down in injury time, needing a goal, there was no point in it. There is no doubting the talent of the player, but a more team player he needs to become.
The greatest players deliver on the greatest day, and unfortunately he failed to deliver. I hope he will learn. Personally I would have taken him off yesterday.
But to the victors, the spoils. And lets all be honest, there were plenty of great Galway men who retired without a Celtic Cross (Joe Rabbite, Ollie Canning, to name but 2). It would have been an injustice if Joe didn't get one.
I always had the height of respect for Galway, their supporters are gracious in victory and defeat. This is their day, enjoy it but don't forget who the only team to beat you in 2017 were ;)
The west is well and truly awake, enjoy it Galway folk, I didn't think in 1996 I would be typing 21 years later without having added to our triumph. They are too hard won to not savour.
Well done Galway.

brilliant Galway, they join Cork as the only county to have a Sam and a Liam in this century, what an achievement, hope to see Waterford back to seal the deal in future.
